Here’s how it was supposed to go:
Their anniversary would set everything in motion with the video and photos on Instagram to flood media with nostalgia stories about their fairytale wedding. Palace sources leak to the tabloids that Kate cried before her wedding just to throw a little shade. William takes part in a social media blackout against cyber bullying in sports. Charlottes Birthday would keep more positive attention on them until Kate’s book release. The photography book about life during lockdown is Kate’s biggest project yet and should drive more glowing coverage.
How it’s going:
The official days of mourning following Prince Philip’s death was the first bump in the plan. They were able to convince the queen to reduce the traditional 30 days to just 2 weeks so they could proceed with the original timeline. Next up, the anniversary video was poorly received since it was obviously filmed a long time ago and felt very commercial. Perhaps the worst coincidence is that Kate’s Covid lockdown photo book releases the same week as Harry and Meghan participate in the VaxLive concert. The timing of the massive global effort to raise billions for Covid vaccines easily overshadows Kate’s book. Worse still, the photography book seems to closely follows the same structure as Meghan’s charity cookbook published last year. Meghan wrote a foreword followed by a collection of recipes by women from the Hubb Kitchen. Each recipe was accompanied by the story of the woman who shared it. Kate also wrote a foreword followed by a collection of photos and stories from the person who shared it (none of the photos are hers.)
Phillip was more than just a bump. The W/K team had the Westiminister Abbey social media team ready to start the rollout of the big 'wedding' renewal weeks in advance. I think they were supposed to have a lot more happy joy-joy posts as well but they ended up bunched into one week like a runaway train because Louis' birthday was on the last day of the reduced mourning period (and even that looked awkward as f - suddenly we're back to all smiles when everyone was looking somber and in tears days prior?), then it was W/K wedding week and then it was Charlotte's birthday. On top of Charles and Camilla's wedding anniversary just getting lost in the shuffle.
I truly believe they built up this anniversary as the big 'let's go post-lockdown' to make up for being basically MIA all 2020 and its just...*crickets*. Still death, still dying, in their own family.
As for her book, I don't even think anyone remembers its coming? That's the problem with the Cambridge 'keen, keen, promise, promise' campaign. No one remembers it, not even the Cambridges.
