ECNL moving to school year not calendar

If you don't think the RAS advantage is MASSIVE, I suggest you read the first few chapters of the book Outliers. RAS advantage is massive, and it's effects are certainly not limited to soccer.

I think that would just make me think that they are the league for players who are not competitive enough or just don’t have high aspirations.

It’s crazy to me that parents would give their kids the idea that their birth month has anything to do with their development and their ability to be successful.

Then your not very smart.

Spoken like someone who makes excuses for everything.
They didn't make an excuse.

This whole thread is an excuse.

Ignoring all the other nonsense thrown out here, if you want to live in a reality that trapped players have no disadvantage then sure. The goal of ECNL is to get players seen by college coaches. This change would make that process easier. That's all that matters.

And I thought the goal of ECNL was player development. Nice to learn something new.
It's mission or goals are actually pretty broad, "To “Raise the Game” by elevating standards and experience in all aspects of youth soccer."

I don’t disagree that trapped players have no disadvantages but I think parents are turning it into a way bigger deal for their kids that necessary.
Ironically, much of this did start with complaining from a parent of a trapped kid, a parent in ECNL leadership.

Malcom Gladwell is not a reliable source for anything remotely based in science and data. He is an armchair pop-science observer at best.

The Barnwell study Gladwell based his observation on was the equivalent the part-time soccer leagues. When you go up the food chain in hockey to the pro levels and the national teams the age distribution reverts…just like the Finnegan study showed.

Yes, more kids quit when they don’t get the minutes, pats on the head, etc that tend to go to earlier birthdate kids because of their accumulated advantage, but it evens out as they climb the pyramid and age.

Please. Stop gaslighting. It’s a problem that doesn’t need to exist. That said you want it to exist so your snowflake doesn’t have to compete with kids in their grade for college recruiting.

Get over it. Move on. Stop telling your kid ppl are snowflakes, and whatever negative assumptions you want them to have just because life is unfair.

That's a shitty mentality for sports and life. it's laughable. woe is me bc i was born in the "wrong" month.

Genetics dictate development on physical size. Hard work and dedication to getting better in the sport dictate development on the field. The month you are born has nothing to do with any of it.

Gaslighting? So we are now claiming victim status over a first world problem? Yikes, this thread bringing out some fragile folks.

I want them to go to grade year because my kid wants to play with their friends. It’s crappy for kids who will never be recruited but are good enough to play above totally rec soccer too. Grade level is more *fun* for the average kid.

Exactly my point, nothing in this “woe is me” thread should be around a genuinely committed and hard working youth athlete.

That makes sense after 18 years old

Not when one kid is 12 and December birthday and his teammate turned 13 in January and is going through puberty already

Parents really telling their kids their hard work and dedication won’t matter bc of their birth month. Wow.
