Navy Elementary New Principal

My kids love Principal Simms-Smith. He has been amazing for the community. We love to see him out at all the events and he is there for every single one.

As for staff morale, they’ve all been complaining of burn out since 2020. TBH most parents are totally over the “burnt out” teacher rhetoric esp at a school like Navy where teachers are spoiled by parents and the PTA well beyond what most other teachers across the district get. Half of them are checked out anyways and maybe it’s better for them to leave if they are not going to properly teach and engage students.

This is a great school for teachers who love to teach. The parents will take care of you like no other school in the area. If you are a teacher you should seek Navy out.

Please stop acting like Starbucks and muffins is spoiling teachers just STOP you sound entitled and condescending. Maybe we should talk about whiny, checked out parents constantly demeaning educators... rumors are NAVY parents are extremely entitled. I'd keep looking teachers!

LOL just Starbucks and muffins? Try $1000s in gift cards over the course of the year for holidays, birthdays and EOY. Try an entire week of teacher appreciation full of daily catered meals, ice cream trucks, coffee stations, dessert bars, entire gift card bouquets, not to mention all the other gifts given independently by students. Try a form filled out by every teacher stating their likes and dislikes so gifts can be bought accordingly.

Parents and the PTA accommodate all of this and much more to keep the teachers happy, but it is unappreciated by some. Navy does have some amazing teachers, but a few of definitely grown complacent and complain nonstop about burn out. It’s time to grow up and be grateful. There are so many other schools in our district who don’t get even a small fraction of the gifts and resources that Navy teachers get.

Maybe they don't want gobs of food and trinkets. Maybe they want you to trust them to do their jobs. Maybe they want you to take all that money and ask them what they want...what they actually need...they can buy their own snacks.

They fill out a wishlist for the PTO for Christ’s sake and have long lists on Amazon for wishlists. Don’t you dare tell me teachers aren’t getting what they want.

Someone higher up said they got 80K worth of projectors. That's pretty cool. I dare you to cut out all the BS snacks and gift cards and only spend PTO money on items to be used for instruction by the teachers for the kids. The lazy ones will always be lazy, can't do much about that, but you can improve how you spend your precious dollars on the others.

"The lazy ones will always be lazy, can't do much about that"

That's the problem! We should be able to do something about that. Instead they go after a new principal. They've shown more dignity and grace towards a drunk driver than to an honest man trying to improve the school for the community. You navy teachers are disgusting. We'll see who shows up at the meeting to take down an innocent man trying to do his job.

Ugh not a Navy teacher but wow....now we know why teachers steer clear of this place. Your behavior is toxic in this post. Hope the principal and poor teachers at this school RUN!

We don’t want the new principal to run. We want him to stay and stand up to those that would tear down his reputation for no other reason than the teacher entitlements. Please do show Reid these posts. They don’t make you teachers look good at all and will generate sympathy for your malicious cause.

You sound pretty nuts.

You sound like the a navy teacher spending her evening responding to every post.

After a hard day of showing videos and handing out slides. Then yelling at children for not paying attention.

You all do realize there is a teacher shortage. I don't know why the teachers are mad at the principal but I am sure there is a valid reason. I hope that both sides can come to a compromise and find some middle ground and work out whatever the issue is.

Stop pretending to post as a non-navy teacher. So fake! What compromise are you looking for? You are trying to get him fired and replace him with the previous administration.

I am not a teacher you dimwit. I am an IT professional. I made 3x as much as a teacher does and work an easy 40 hour week in my own quiet office with no one to bother me. I am so grateful for the teachers working their butts off so I am afforded the privilege to sit in this office and not have to teach my own kid. Whatever the teacher wants, I am happy to give. I also have the utmost respect for the principal as his job is my no means an easy one. You, however, are a coward. You sit behind a screen of anonymity spewing your acrimony. I feel sorry for you.

You are so obviously a teacher. Did you use ChatGPT to help with that fake post?

No and no. You are a fool.

Okay you’re an IT professional working at the IT store or IT factory for a gajillion dollars having such an easy relaxed thanks to amazing teachers. Sure you’re definitely not a fake poster. Lol

And you sound to be incredibly unintelligent. Have you read other posts on this forum? Particularly the ones where people are complaining of a lack of teachers or having a teacher-in-training with little qualifications and no experience? If not, then I suggest you do a search and then come back here and post about what an incredible ignoramus you are and you can thank me for enlightening you. Signed, a parent (not a teacher)

Maybe you can explain it better to me with one of your amazing slideshows Ms. Navy Teacher pretending to be an IT professional.

+1 no way an IT professional just happens to trickle in to the Navy thread and get incensed about what’s going on in the FCPS forum. LOL.

I worked with Mr. Simms-Smith at a previous school and I can’t believe all of this hate for him. I can’t think of a single person who didn’t think highly of him. He was kind, patient, and thoughtful. He's not going to do everything one wants, I’m sure. But he’s not one to dismiss you out-of-hand or speak rudely. He has realistic expectations for teachers and students. “We” were sorry to have him leave, but happy for his promotion. A genuinely good person, IMO.

Who’s talking about muffins and Starbucks? Try over $200 in cash or gift cards for the holiday and end of year gifts. The PTO makes teachers have wishlists which the room moms to get a bunch of stuff from. Try gift cards at every godd*mn holiday and even a giant birthday gift. Try gift cards for teacher appreciation week. Try an Amazon wishlist posted at open house that parents are encouraged to get stuff from. Try book fair gifts. Try going to a Title 1 school and see what you get. STFU.

LOL....ok sure.

So you don’t get a big fat gift card or various gift cards for a holiday gift (from your wishlist for the PTO which lists your favorite things such as restaurants and stores?) and an end of the year gift from your class? And you don’t get a birthday gift? Or a teacher appreciation week with a gift card bought? Or any gifts throughout the year? Do you have an Amazon wish list for your class?

You are so full of sh*t. Every room parent at Navy organizes these things.

LOL I'm not a NAVY teacher just amazed at the entitlement and grossness of parents on here. Please continue showing us your true colors....LOL!!!!

In a previous post a Navy teacher laughed as if they don’t get all of that stuff and they actually do. That’s not entitlement on the part of the person explaining what they get. If they went to a Title 1 school with zero parental involvement, they would not be spoiled like that. That’s a fact.

The email asks parents to register and go to a community meeting at another school. This doesn’t seem right at all.

Anyone from the FCPS community is invited to come and that school is the location where the meeting is behind held. It is a community wide event and not specifically for that one school.

Except the email specifically is encouraging Navy families to come and air grievances about the new Navy principal. Shame on whoever is involved.

All this because the new principal isn’t as easily swayed by PTA moms?

I'm not going to paste the email, but it made reference to a couple of recent incidents where there was apparently police involvement but the school community was not notified. I can't verify whether the information is true or not -- I had not heard anything about either incident. It is concerning if true. The other part of the email referred to staff feeling unsupported. That part came off more whiny to me and not something that a parent should be bringing up on behalf of teachers, in my opinion. It makes the teachers look bad. Clearly someone is complaining to parents. Even if you hate your principal that is unprofessional. At Navy the lines between parents and teachers are a little too blurry sometimes. Maybe parents shouldn't be allowed to frequently sub at their kids' own school. You want to make money as a sub, do it somewhere else. Don't do it so you can spy on your kid's school day and get the best teacher placements for your kid.

This gossip shouldn’t be spread in a malicious email like this. This quite frankly is looking more and more like a witch hunt. It honestly all sounds like sour grapes.

For police involvement I was there when the cop interviewed a kid next to the sign in sign out laptop. I think the interview should have taken place somewhere more private.

“Interview”? BS. More like a question.

I can repeat the particulars. The cop was asking questions for the entire 5 min while I waited for my kid.

Had to do with what was said, religion, what classes they had together (6th grade AAP) etc.

So you’d rather it have been more formal in an interrogation room?

And then it was determined there was no credible threat. So there was that.
