Sleepover in outdoor tent

Anonymous
DD wants to set up a tent in the backyard for her birthday sleepover. The tent will just barely fit her and her friends, so no room for a parent to be out there with them. Would you be comfortable with that or would you want a parent out there?

If it matters at all, we have a fenced yard so people can’t see the tent from the street, and our street is not one that has any thru traffic. The kids are ~9yo.

I would be fine with it as long as other parents are. Sounds like huge fun.

I think it sounds like a lot of fun, too! Would you be able to sleep on the couch inside, just in case one of the girls needs something in the night?

Be sure of have flashlights or a battery powered lantern in case they have to go to the bathroom.

Why even lock the doors at night? Honestly I am just way too paranoid to even consider this.

I tried to do this my 10 yo son and his friends and none of the other families (3) felt comfortable with it.

Obviously I think it’s fine but a lot of ppl don’t.

Go for it. If you are a bit more worried, you can buy a less expensive tent at Target for an adult but I would not see the need to do that.

Maybe the “goody bag gift” could be a head lamp. I think you can find ones in the $10 range and head lamps are great for camping and power outages.

I would be ready to move the kids inside if it is as muggy and hot out as it is now, more for comfort then safety.

As an aside, If you have a family tent that is that small and you camp you might want to look into something bigger. We have a 6 person LL Bean tent that we love.

Absolutely not. Get a larger tent, kids sleep in that and parents sleep in smaller tent.

In the back yard? That is fenced in? Of course this is fine! Our now teens did this around 8 years old. We made s'mores in the firepit and the kids had a blast!

Yep, I'd be fine with it. But I'd hope a parent slept on the couch nearest to the back door, with a window open so they could hear noise.

Some people can sleep through noise. Why not sleep outside with them?

Sorry, I’m sleep-deprived and had a brain freeze. At 9 I’d probably allow it.

+1 An adult needs to be out there with them.
