Our DD who will go to 8th grade in fall got an A- in summer geometry.
I was wondering if parents of current TJ students can advise. In your experience, is A- in a subject a problem when trying for TJ. She also got A- in English too in 7th grade. Thanks |

Standing alone, it probably won’t kill her application. But it’s not ideal. Especially the geometry A-. Especially since it was summer school. And especially if she can’t go on and pull a solid A in A2.
Are you sure she got all the content she needs? Because A2 bs geometry doesn’t give your kid and admissions boost. And this plays out at Carson every single year. But, if her background is at all sketchy because it was compact and online learning, I’d expunge and have her retake geometry this year. Get the A and a solid background. You do not want a kid at TJ with a shaky math background. It’s a great way to get a C+ in their first math 3 or 4 (non-research State math class). Btdt. |

Thanks for replying!
I agree, it will be tough for her at higher level math at TJ (if she gets in) but she enjoys Algebra more than Geometry and is looking forward to learning Algebra II. She is glad she is done with Geometry. We didn't want her to to take summer geometry but she insisted. I wish FCPS doesn't allow kids to do summer math. How do they expect kids to learn everything in 5-6 weeks that they would otherwise learn in a year. Hope A- in two subjects is not a problem when applying to TJ. We are worried about that as she would like to get admitted to TJ. That's our main concern. |

I say this with no snark, and a kid who hated geometry. If she did it online to do the minimum to get through, make her retake the class. Getting into TJ is all well and good. But a very large percentage of the class has to drop, and the math is brutal. Just getting in is pointless if you don’t survive freshman year.
She should retake. She can probably do it as an elective and take A2 at the same time. Plus, expunge the A- now. That is going to raise red flags— especially in summer school. pS— tJ is lots and lots of math, and many kids hate some of the required classes. |

Thank you!
Taking geometry as an elective is a great idea. I will expire it. |
| Sorry.. got auto corrected. I meant ‘explore it’ |
Do not blame county for giving options. You are the one who paid for it. If you did not want your kid to do math why pay and now complain.....just say the truth you forced it on your child. |
|
Lol..I am amazed how you truly believe that parents force their kids in taking summer math. It is difficult for you to fathom that a kid could be interested in doing summer math.
I wonder why you think that way. You don't know me or my child but you still have an opinion about us. |

Agree with 9:19 poster. Do not blame county. You signed up no one forced you.
On the other note she got A-. What are you teaching her that nothing but A is good. This is the reason lot of kids get mental health issues that I see. Be happy and let her move to next level. |
I would just caution that around 85% of applicants are not going to get into TJ. I remember going to a meeting at our middle school, and the teacher warned that not getting into TJ can throw smart kids for a loop and send them into depression, because they’ve never faced rejection before. When you talk about her application, be sure to add that getting in is pretty difficult and no sure thing, and play up the fact that her base school has some amazing options. Also stress that she will have more time to explore extra curriculars if she has a shorter commute. And if you read this forum, you’ll see plenty of parents discussing how college admissions at TJ are tricky when you’re competing against your classmates who are superstars. This is from a parent of one TJ kid and one non-TJ kid. |

I agree. There are many smart kids and not all will be able to get in as they have limited seats.
We are lucky that we have a very good base high school. Either way she will be fine but she needs to understand that too. |
| If 7th grade takes algebra I then 8th grade take geometry?am I corrected |
That's right |
Does the school allow the student take both at the same time? |
Many schools will because the Geometry is a repeat to get a stronger foundation, and the kid has already demonstrated enough mastery of geometry to move on to the next level. Not saying they love it, or it’s a good idea. But it’s done. |
