We got our oldest daughter a brand new spanking car when she graduated high school in 2013. She went to a local university and needed a car to get around. Bad part was: she crashed it twice in under a year. She had just started to learn to drive that year. Ever since then, no more crashes except when she got into a minor fender bender a couple years ago (not her fault).
Now my youngest is going to a local community college and got her first job. My DH wants to get her an older car (2015-16). But I want to get a newer car because that way you know for sure there have been to crashes etc We did end up paying $2000 to fix the two crashes for my oldest daughters car. DH doesn’t want to go through that again. Oldest daughter still has the car we bought her and has given her no problems. I’m also starting to contemplate getting her another car simply because my youngest daughter is more careless than older daughter. Any thoughts or concerns? Either way we want to get her a car because I don’t want to keep paying for uber and public transportation here is not a great option. |
| So you are trying to figure out what kind of car to buy for a careless kid? |
Yes. She tends to not clean up after herself, rooms always a mess, forgets to turn lights off sometimes, always loses her house Keyes. Things like that. |
| A 3 year old car is not an “older” car. Stop with the drama. Get the used car. |
Cool so then you reward that behavior with an almost new or new car? Sounds wise. |
|
Little used Japanese for under $2000. I just sold mine for pennies on a dollar, and it will last the new owner 7-10 years easily. After 7 years your daughter should be able to buy her own brand new car.

Well, you’ve set yourself up badly. FWIW I would never buy my kid an even remotely new car, but you did that for the older one so now you’re kind of an asshole if you do different for the younger one I guess. Seems like punishment for her merely going to community college. Such a disappointment

| Its crappy to get your youngest a used old car vs. your daughter a new one. Don't punish her for her siblings mistakes. SHese's been driving for 2 years and ifs he's accident free,s he's doing great. Get her the same or stop being cheap and pay for a four year school where she doesn't need a car. |
She didn’t get into any 4 year colleges. And she would still need a car. She has a job. Even if she went to any university around where we live, a car would be needed. And DH and I just don’t want her to get into accidents but obviously the only way of that happening is not getting her a car. |
She could get into a four year college but she didn't apply to those that would accept her. Big difference. She doesn't have to go close to where you live. No freshman needs a car nor do most schools allow it. |
Excuse me but you have no idea where she applied so please sit down thank you. My oldest daughters university had dorms and each student was able to park a car in the parking lot if needed. So what do you mean most colleges don’t allow it. I’ve never heard of that before. Either way DH and I wouldn’t have been able to pay the tuition for out of state if she choose. She chose a lot of in state colleges and even then couldn’t get in. |

Lol 2015-2016 is not an old car, plus you can check the VIn and get an insurance claims history as well as have a mechanic inspection on any used car.
Most 2015-2016s on the used market with reasonable mileage haven't been in any crashes. |
| Also your older daughter is now what, 25? Old enough to buy her own car if she wants a new one. |
OP your kid sounds like my DS. Messy, disorganized, forgets/loses things. But a stellar student I must say -- got into a top 20 university. I bought him a 2017 Honda with leather. The car has yet to be washed and there is lots of trash in it. But it is not "dirty," in other words, he doesn't eat in it. I think that is key in terms of keeping a car in good shape. He is also a very good driver. Oh, and I strongly getting a car with leather if buying used. Every car we test drove without leather smelled bad to me. Leather will also be better for resale. |
