OP your kid sounds like my DS.  Messy, disorganized, forgets/loses things.  But a stellar student I must say -- got into a top 20 university.  I bought him a 2017 Honda with leather.  The car has yet to be washed and there is lots of trash in it.  But it is not "dirty," in other words, he doesn't eat in it.  I think that is key in terms of keeping a car in good shape.  He is also a very good driver.

Oh, and I strongly getting a car with leather if buying used.  Every car we test drove without leather smelled bad to me.  Leather will also be better for resale.

PS, I should have said I bought the 2017 car a year ago (in 2018).
