The EMT thing is an urban legend made up after the fact. It’s for courtesy and general “fellow drivers, maybe be a little more careful” reasons.

If you think about it, the EMT thing is illogical. Especially if you don’t remove your baby on board sign when the baby is not in the car. A car seat is a better indicator, although even that is not always reason to think a baby was or is in the car (and could have been thrown out even if a baby was there). EMTs cover all possible eventualities no matter what. And it’s not like they’re going to take their sweet time rescuing you if they don’t see the sign. Besides, if the accident is bad enough that no conscious adult can tell them there was or is a baby in the car, there’s a good chance the sign will have been mangled. It just... doesn’t make all that much sense— and that’s if you don’t remember the actual origin of the signs.
