Oakridge Teacher Speaks Out at SB Meeting!

Anonymous
A coworker attended last week's APS school board meeting and pointed out a portion in which an Oakridge teacher spoke out against retaliatory and discriminatory practices by the administration at Oakridge. Her segment can be found at the 1:44:10 mark: https://www.apsva.us/school-board-meetings/watch-school-board-meetings/
To my knowledge, this teacher has an excellent reputation amongst coworkers and parents, as do the two other teachers she referenced (one of whom was an Oakridge Teacher of the Year) who also had their personal belongings and teaching materials thrown out over the summer as retaliation for speaking up about erratic and abusive practices by administration. I think that for these practices to stop, the community needs to be made aware.

Is that the one who complained about being asked not to staple papers during a meeting?

Wow. What is going on at Oakridge?

Wasn't the principal a principal of the year a few years back?

She has her cheerleaders among the staff.

It is (or should be) reasonable for leaders to ask staff members not to staple or multi-task during meetings. Obviously, such correction should be administered fairly and equally without singling out one teacher but not saying anything to others who are multitasking. My guess is that she was already extra sensitive to anything coming from administration after seeing her materials and belongings in dumpsters in the rain last summer.

What a mess in APS right now. Why am I not surprised that some white woman who graduated from Yorktown would discriminate against a distinguished teacher of color? Wright needs to be fired if APS wants to have any chances of recruiting strong minority candidates. This is simply unacceptable.

But fired by who? The superintendent who suddenly "retired" on very short notice?

Nothing racist to see here. Move along.

Why were her things out in dumpsters? The only reason I can think of is that the classroom was supposed to be cleaned out and she didn’t, so the school had to do it for her.

I believe the other teacher she cited was using a laptop, and may have been using the laptop to take notes in the meeting. Stapling is louder/more disruptive than typing on a laptop, and very obviously had no relationship to the purpose of the meeting (whereas the laptop might have).

Agree. Shuffling papers and stapling is noisy and distracting. and rude. Don't our students take notes on computers?

FWIW, the teacher reminds me of something that we complained about in my school many years ago. Over the summer, somehow things would get thrown away---here's a little secret: it wasn't the principal that did it. It was the cleaning crew. Even things that we thought were obviously "put away." I suspect there is a lot more to that story.

And, i recall a faculty meeting where a teacher of color got up and ranted about something the principal had done and cried racism. He had totally treated her like anyone else, she created a "dragon" that did not exist. People were embarrassed for her.
I know nothing about the situation here. The lady might be totally true in her accusation. My take: she was mad about getting called out for stapling papers. She felt humiliated.
I was at a meeting the other night where someone was speaking from a podium. A woman behind me was shuffling papers (not stapling, though.) Even the shuffling was quite distracting and annoying.

Their things were boxed up and labeled—they were moving classrooms.

Were they labeled in English and Spanish? Just asking because at our school we know to label in both languages or some of our things will get misplaced/thrown out over the summer. This has nothing to do with administration. Our cleaning and maintenance staff works very hard but some do not speak English.

Don’t let the facts get in the way of these racists eager to discredit a black teacher calling out overt discrimination and racism in APS. They didn’t like it when the minority students spoke up at Yorktown, either. Remember how NVD cut them off in mid-sentence at the hearing?

APS needs a complete overhaul.

Lol racism in APS, they will hire any non white teacher that can fog a mirror. Y'all are barking up the wrong tree, but go ahead it's discrediting all the fake racism
