Hendley Elementary school has recently had 3 bullets shatter the front window glass within 2 weeks. The students were inside for one and witnessed the shooting. This violence, although it’s not broadcasted on tv, it is too common for this school. Lockdown happens way too often and help is never given. WNBA player Natasha Cloud has recently decided to use her platform to help bring awareness and demand change. Please retweet her tweet and tag @hendleyES and tag @trayonWhite @DCPSChancellor @MayorBowser and any news station asking what they are doing..

Jeez. Those poor kids. The gun culture in this country is nuts. We are not war-torn. Why are bullets flying through school windows?? |
Ward 8 feels as though it’s war torn. |
| I can tell you from the 19 shootings within a block of Tubman, some across the street, some running through the playground, the answer will be nothing. We haven’t even heard from DCPS or the mayor. |
| This is so appalling. Does the school administration just ignore or are their communications with the community and/or community meetings to discuss? |
| How is the mayor not even addressing this? Those poor kids! |
Of course they don’t just ignore it. |
She doesn’t care about them. The crime has only gotten worse over the years. Kids stay in their apartments and don’t play outside because of how unsafe it has gotten. There will be a news article here and there but nothing comes from it. This shouldn’t be happening in DC |
Admin works so hard to try to get supports needed but it falls to deaf ears. Look at there response to this tweet. The Mayor has been silence and Trayon is making it about him. This school needs me help. It’s been years of kids running in from recess because of drive-bys during recess hours and years of lockdowns. No one will help them. Let’s start putting pressure on the mayor, chancellor and Trayon. We have to stop this violent cycle or it will continue to get worse. Tag @HendleyES in any tweet so they see your support! |
School admins are very concerned about this kind of thing. At my school, admin have run into the street to bring kids back inside when the outside is unsafe. But seriously, what can the admin do about these issues? They are educators this needs a police, political and community response. |

Former DC teacher here, I worked in Ward 8, near Alabama Ave & Stanton Rd SE. I left mid October after I witnessed for the third time a speeding car chase happen, gunshots heard while I was on the playground with my kindergarten students and we had to lay on the ground all while MPD sirens went off. This happened between 10 a.m. and noon.
Trying to get 22 kindergarten kids to lay on the ground immediately is difficult as they often have questions. I left because I didn’t want to be held liable for the death of an innocent child, nor did I want to be shot myself but more importantly I didn’t feel like children that young should be trained as if they lived in a war zone from the Middle East. No, I don’t blame legal gun owners as I have family members that are ex-military, FBI and CIA. I blame the criminals who feel entitled to guns and often are not properly trained to use guns responsibly. |

https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/wizards/mystics-natasha-cloud-holds-strong-media-blackout-amid-gun-reform-calls Would you want your child going to this school? PLEASE help and be a voice for a community that feels voiceless and that has been ignored for far too long. Please post the articles or retweet anything from @t_Cloud4 twitter and tag the Mayor, Chancellor, and Trayon White. Also tag @HendleyES on twitter so they see your support and the Mayor, Chancellor, and The Ward 8 Councilman knows that we will not allow this to go on any longer. The Mayor has been in ignoring this area since she has been in office. We need solutions And giving vouchers to leave or going to a different school in a different ward Is NOT the answer.. When kids can’t be kids and play outside in YOUR DISTRICT, when kids are going to school and trying to get an education and bullets are flying in the front window in YOUR DISTRICT and you don’t acknowledge it? YOU are part of the problem. Are you the Mayor of the District or just certain Wards?? Because this has been happening since you have been in office and you’ve NEVER done anything to support that area. As long as areas like this continue to be ignored, the violence in DC will continue and worsen throughout the years as it already has. Families across the city are shocked when they hear about what’s going on a few miles away and question why they don’t hear about it more.... because she doesn’t care about them. Let’s come together and let her know that we care and demand that action! This is our future! This is our city! |
| This mayor should be held accountable for a whole lot of issues that she ignores. But this is really at the top of the list. If the children in this city cannot be safe in their own schools then she must act. |

Ms. Cloud is a joke a clueless. To blame folks for this madness is absurd when its ALL the parents fault.
This school is plague by this type of activity. See story from 2017. https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/local/dc/dc-elementary-school-in-middle-of-turf-war/490004547 I mean really what can the Mayor do for this kids? I see a lot of events going on in Ward 8, but the audiences are not who they are trying to reach. |
How? Serious questions when social media has a big influence on all this madness. It's sad that these kids do stuff for likes and comments. It's the parents folks. Nothing to see here. I will say the Mayor needs to do better in this regard, but she's too busy making DC unaffordable. |
