I agree! She needs to go. She’s creating a bigger hole for the next Mayor. If Natasha never called her out, she would have never addressed the situations just like the past 20 lockdowns! There was another shooting this morning up the block from the school. One dead and one in the hospital with life threatening injuries. So sad! And so wrong! |
Former DC teacher here, I worked in Ward 8, near Alabama Ave & Stanton Rd SE. I left mid October after I witnessed for the third time a speeding car chase happen, gunshots heard while I was on the playground with my kindergarten students and we had to lay on the ground all while MPD sirens went off. This happened between 10 a.m. and noon.
Trying to get 22 kindergarten kids to lay on the ground immediately is difficult as they often have questions. I left because I didn’t want to be held liable for the death of an innocent child, nor did I want to be shot myself but more importantly I didn’t feel like children that young should be trained as if they lived in a war zone from the Middle East. No, I don’t blame legal gun owners as I have family members that are ex-military, FBI and CIA. I blame the criminals who feel entitled to guns and often are not properly trained to use guns responsibly.
Can you explain why "ex-military" means that someone should feel entitled to a gun? In my opinion, just because you had use for one once, and had some training, doesn't mean that you're entitled to a deadly weapon. If anything, seems to me that ex-military should be one of the big flashing warning signs restricting gun ownership. There's a high rate of mental illness among vets. Many of the homeless living on the streets are vets who are now mentally ill. Some of them poop out in the open, oblivious to the people watching in horror, because in their sick minds they are actually somewhere else entirely. They literally live in another world. And the man who just murdered someone (and put two others in critical condition) in the Southern Californian Costco store is a current police officer who was off-duty at the time. The off-duty cop mowed down 3 innocent, unarmed people with his firearm that he felt entitled to carry around. NOBODY is entitled to a deadly weapon unless the country requires you to have it on your person at the time you're wearing it, as part of your job. Anything else is unacceptable and is only contributing to the bloodshed. |
| Find long term solution may take time, so till then fast solution - shouldn't they install bullet proof windows so the kids could not get hurt? Kids safety is paramount and school system should be able to help immediately to protect children because if someone gets hurt it would be a tragedy that could have been avoided. |

People have a right to defense & gun ownership but let’s be real here mentally ill people are in every profession & walk of life. Mothers & or nannies who drown children, for example. The problem is criminals and the mentally ill people will find a way to harm someone if their heart is set on it. If not guns, knives [see London], cars, fire, etc. The city should be investing in a mentally ill hospital and caring for those in need. DC used to have St. Elizabeth’s now it has nothing. Traumatized people hurt others.

I dont even know who the chief of police is now. Is it Lanier? DC police seem extra low visibility these days. They also seem incapable of solving even the smallest crimes. Case in point, why did neighbors catch the Mt. Pleasant rapist hitting the SAME apartment complex for the THIRD time? No one in PD thought a stake out might be called for? Just saying yes to community policing, but the trend seems to be to be a very passive police force right now. |
| We should not be dodging bullets in our school yards or on our streets. The reason we are is because people are allowed to manufacture and sell guns to private citizens. Those guns make their way into the hands of criminals. |
I miss Cathy Lanier. |
Who IS the chief now??? I could name Ramsey and Lanier. I could also name the school superintendanta. Why are people in charge of big important city systems so low profile under Bowser? Nuisance crime is out of control in this city. The police consider car crimes (window smashing, theft) insurances problem. They dont even have a task force. No shock that people are shooting with impunity in some neighborhoods. At some point our city needs to decide if we care about everyone NOT having a criminal record (current trend) or if we care about the majority doing the right thing? I am all for putting money into prevention, anti recidivism education while incarcerated and mental health - but we need to come down hard on crime when it does happen in our city. Ugh. |

Such a lazy argument I’m disappointed to see here. Come on, get educated. |

Such a lazy argument I’m disappointed to see here. Come on, get educated.
DC prosecutors regularly plead down illegal gun charges with minor possession (see Post article a few years ago on the DC Youth Reform Act). When they actually are proactive about taking away and prosecuting illegal guns, I'd be much more inclined to go after vets with legal guns. |
| Council is doing everything possible to undermine and underfund polic. Especially nadeau. Columbia Heights has had shootings in the middle day 9 times in the last 6 weeks. Tubman elem has gone on lock down because of bullets flying outside. Nadeau opens her meeting a with “I know you are all scared of police so I’m just letting you know they will be here but will stand in one place in the room” wtf. Then she says we don’t need police but “violence disrupters”- council got rid of Vice squads over the objection of police. Community meetings do NOTHING to stop violence. Nothing. |

Peter Newsham, current police chief.
Policing here in DC is hampered by lack of political will to actually prosecute criminals. Repeat offenders back on the streets after committing crimes. If you want people on council/mayor who actually care more about law-abiding citizens than criminals, you have to vote for them. - Not a Democrat |

Peter Newsham is the current police chief. Started as interim in 217 when Lanier left to take the NFL chief security job in New York.

100% agree. Do you have any candidate to suggest? I am hoping there are more than 2 of us. Happy to back anyone with an alternative viewpoint to the current by and large disappointing Council and Mayor. |
