This school is the “pick me girl” of schools for a certain type of American kid.

They lure you in with “we aren’t like the other schools… and we know you are independent with a sense of adventure and maturity.”

And then you get there, and the UK kids look down on you and the services are just meh. These UK schools are cash strapped! And Americans are a necessary evil.

They are using us for money, but god forbid you need their help with visas or housing within twenty miles of campus.

They gaslight you into thinking you’re a high maintenance American, when really they are just hanging on by a bagpipe

I agree with your post but "cash-strapped" is St Andrews only, not the other schools. That's why St A markets to Americans.

I know academics at several UK universities. All of those academics say their uni would be in financial trouble if they did not take a lot of full-fee foreign students.

Not true in my experience. At Oxbridge. St Andrews is famous for its fail after WWII and need to bring in Americans to survive. No other UK university has its problems

The Oxbridge crowd just can't get over th fact that it is Stoxbridge now.

What does that even mean? I think you're bringing your private, weirdo-loner jokes to a public forum and they just don't fly.

Just ignore

That person has been attempting to make “StOxbridge” for some time now. Ignore.

I went to St Andrews and multiple of my friends chose St Andrews over Ivy League schools (Dartmouth, Columbia, Penn, etc; obviously not over Harvard, Yale, or Princeton). I’m not suggesting that St Andrews is better than these schools, however, for certain students it can be a better fit. The curriculum in third/fourth years is challenging, especially for the sciences.

The disgruntled parents on this thread are comical and uninformed.

St Andrews is consistently top 3 in the UK for graduate prospectus and student satisfaction across multiple rankings. Bottom line: students are getting good outcomes and lauding their university experience. What else do you need?

Actual prestige. My kid is at Oxford and says students there think St. Andrews and its machine to glomb onto American students and their American dollars is embarrassing to higher ed there. It's viewed there somewhat like Northeastern is here by serious academics.

Its a great option for a mature student, the rise in ranking ruffles the feathers of the old guard, but deserves the rankings and provides a quality education at a reasonable price for international students.

Why on earth would they think it’s embarrassing? Strange. British universities are in a huge funding crisis but at least St Andrews has figured it out somewhat. If anything, I imagine other top tier universities are looking at their model and wondering how to emulate at least some of its successes.

Not to mention somewhat hypocritical given 25% of undergrads and 65% of postgrads at Oxford are international students.

St Andrews is more like a Dartmouth or Cornell, not some directional school.

St Andrews is most definitely not on the same level as Northeastern and St Andrews does have prestige. Don’t ask a current Oxford student about prestige that’s like asking a Harvard student about Brown. Ask someone who recruits for competitive jobs (consulting, tech, finance) or a graduate school (law school, business school, etc.)… you’ll find the truth there

+1

I think Brown is the best comparison.

I work at a Fortune 500 company and have recruited at MBB consulting firms (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) and investment banking positions.

St Andrews is considered the same prestige as a low ivy.

Don’t listen to the disgruntled parents or the pretentious Oxford students.
