The Twitter Files

Fake accounts on Twitter caused billions of dollars in shareholder holdings in Eli Lilly and Boeing to evaporate overnight.

Why hasn't Taibbi reported on that?

Instead we're supposed to be outraged that @JoePatriot6603 (and his previous incarnations of @JoePatriot6602, @JoePatriot6601 etc) got repeatedly banned for falsely claiming Biden's laptops have child porn on them and that Biden is part of a cabal that abducts, rapes and sacrifices children.

*crickets*

That posters insisting on how important the "twitter drops" are haven't been heard from in hours.

Maybe it's just one poster.

For example, all of the anti-vax disinformation, which was responsible for hundreds of thousands of excess deaths?

And the anti-maskers. Science has repeatedly proven that masks are in fact quite effective in reducing exposure and risk from viruses that cause respiratory illness. And ask yourself why the anti-maskers don't demand their surgeons wear no masks when they get operated on...

It's all toxic disinformation, which is making Americans sicker, it's dividing them and damaging their families through the loss of loved ones, it's making America less productive, it's dragging our economy down. There is absolutely no legitimate reason why it can't or shouldn't be labeled as disinformation, absolutely no legitimate reason why social media platforms should be amplifying or promoting it.

Jacobin and The Nation, taking into consideration all the criticisms, think the twitter files are important. Among other things, they are reasonably concerned that the entanglements revealed in the files could one day be turned against the left.

And we don't have any assurances whatsoever that Twitter wouldn't be weaponized against the left by Musk. So far all we've seen is a handful of selected, out-of-context and extremely one-sided releases weaponized against the government and against the Biden campaign. No evidence that those mechanisms have in fact been dismantled - and, given the termination of a huge number of staff it's become far less transparent to know. And meanwhile, as has been pointed out, many other facts are NOT being focused on by Taibbi and others.

Huh what? Musk has shown himself to be a hypocrite on free speech, the #twitterfiles have been shown to be highly selective, and what convincing assurances of any kind have we ever gotten out of Musk, and what can we even believe from him, given how erratic he's been.

What are we supposed to believe?

I’d believe what The Nation and Jacobin have to say.

No thanks.
I'm left wing but The Nation is too far left for me and a lot of the stuff in Jacobin is outright tankie propaganda.

Let's take a look at that...

Jacobin, in the span of 10 days, went from Musk's twitter being the beacon of free speech and free press https://jacobin.com/2022/12/twitter-files-hunter-biden-social-media-censorship-press-freedom to red flags and warnings of twitter's dystopian censorship of journalists. https://jacobin.com/2022/12/elon-musk-twitter-censorship-journalist-account-suspension-liberal-hypocrisy

So which Jacobin did you mean?

The only acceptable answer is that initially Jacobin got it wrong. They overestimated Musk and thought his motives were genuine and altruistic and well-thought-out. But then they saw Musk censoring journalists, amplifying far right conspiracy theorists, and engaging in petty, childish exchanges, while completely screwing the pooch on how to run Twitter, and realized they had Musk all wrong.

That's what the PP should be understanding as well, because that's the only real truth here.

Seems a certain Senator (Rhymes with bliss) tried to have journalists banned from Twitter. Twitter pushed back at first.
