| I have long hair (long hair looks better on me) and I have to blow-dry it for it to look good. But I am so tired of having to blow-dry it!! What are my options? When I air dry it, my hair looks positively awful- flat, frizzy, and goes in between wavy and straight all over. Are there any products, tips, things I can do so I don't have to blow dry every day? |

I have thick curly hair that just hits the top of my shoulders. I alternate between blow drying and letting it go curly throughout the depending on my schedule (do I have time to blow dry), the weather and what look I want for what I’m doing.
—First make sure you have a great cut. When mine starts to get too long, it can look like “Cathy” from that cartoon strip. Not good. —Invest in some good products. I use Argan oil when I want a softer curly look without the frizz. Also love the Miss Jessie’s curly Meringue. Put it in, scrunch, leave and don’t touch for several hours. —Bought the Revlon One Step hair dryer this winter after reading rave reviews here. Love it. It has cut my drying time and gives a much more polished look. Again, I use a little bit of argan oil before drying. Hope this helps. |
| Hate blow drying mine too. Very thick hair, and lots of it (some salons make me pay a supplement because of this). I used to let it grow mid-length to longish, because i’ve always thought it suited me better. Recently, I asked my hairdresser what kind of cut she would have done it she were me, and to cut it that way. She gave me a shorter cut which I ended up liking (after getting used to it), and it’s much easier to blow dry. |
| Don’t wash your hair every day. It’s bad for your hair and so time-consuming. Start training your hair by washing it every other day, then every 3rd. Use some dry shampoo if needed (but try not to use it too much because it can be bad for your hair). Also, I’ve started using Living Proof Style Extender, and it definitely keeps my hair looking nicer for longer so I don’t need to wash it as often. |
| I bought the Revlon one step thing but I still have to use my hairdryer. The Revlon one isn’t powerful enough for my thick hair. |
| I shower at night and let air dry (thick wavy hair that gets super frizzy). In the morning I use a flat iron. A good quality one will really make a difference in how long it takes. My hair is just below shoulder length and maybe it takes 10-15 minutes. Hair drying could take 30-40 and still need to be ironed to look good. I get at least two days out of it. |
Can you recommend a dry shampoo? I've tried a few brands but none I really liked how my hair looked, smelled, and felt. |
Yes this. I have dermatitis on my scalp so only can do every other day or I get bad flaking but it does help. I can’t air dry at night because it isn’t dry in the morning. |
| You need product, and a medium haircut. The right products will make a huge difference. |
| How long is long? If you look good with long hair and it is much passed your shoulders I would shorten it to shoulder length- it will still look good and be easier to blow dry and maybe look ok to air dry |
My fave dry shampoo is also Living Proof. It works really well. I’ve tried Drybar (makes my hair too stiff), Amika (doesn’t work), and Macadamia Professional (works ok and is cheaper so I sometimes get it as a money saver, but it doesn’t look like it’s available from Ulta anymore so might be discontinued). |
I like Living Proof and also Oribe. |

Can you just decide that you like your non-blowdried hair? Perhaps work with a stylist to give you a cut specifically for that. |
As someone who also has wavy hair, it’s not that easy. I like my hair air dried in the summer when I’m at the beach or vacation but for work, it just looks too beachy. And my air dried hair looks terrible after sleeping on it so I end up washing it even more! |
| I go to a cheap salon for a professional blow dry once a week on Sunday afternoons. Then my hair looks great for the workweek. It's only $25 for the blow dry and style and worth it to me to not have to mess with my hair all week for it to just look mediocre. When I get it done at the salon it looks amazing all week. |
