| Anyone else? I already have some joint pains before starting. I was eating way more dairy in the beginning which I know can be inflammatory, but I cut that way back about a week ago and my hands and feet are still very swollen. Anyone else? I feel like I am the only person where the weight isn't just falling off. Everyone else seems to have lost water weight the first week and I actually gained a lb. Now getting close to a month in and I'm still retaining water. |
| High protein diet is hard on your kidneys. When your kidneys are stressed, you get swelling. |
| Keto doesn’t work for everyone. I had massive fatigue and a weird rash and almost constant eye twitches on keto. I also didn’t lose much. Everyone is different. Sounds like it’s not working for you! |
| I'd be worried about Kidney issues, OP. See your doc. |
+1. Also make sure that you’re not eating too much salt. |
| I listened to all the advice to drink lots of water and eat more salt on keto and I'd get a puffy face every morning. Then I cut back on salt and it stopped happening. |
Kidney failure- lovely. I mean, who needs kidneys anyway?? |
Except that keto is not high protein. It's *adequate* protein. |
Exactly. The reasonable protein portioning is actually what sets Keto aside from other diets. It's possible that you don't have your macros right and are eating way to much protein. You might be over consuming salt and carbs. Regardless, I would probably go to the doctor and get that checked out. |
Then all the more reason to see a doctor. If the swelling coincided with starting the diet, it’s probably related to the diet, but you want to be safe. Ask to have your eGFR (kidney function) calculated. You want that number to be over 90. Many PCPs still don’t pay much attention to kidney function testing— you need to push for it if it’s not included in your routine lab work. |
