War with Iran

There is enormous support for regime change both within Iran and among the Iranian diaspora. In Toronto alone, 350,000 people marched in support of Iranian protesters last month. And the collapse of the Iranian regime is good not just for the Middle East, but also for Europe and Ukraine. The Iranian regime has been an important ally of Russia, supplying it with Shaheed drones. It should be expected that Canada and most western and Middle Eastern allies support regime change in Iran. The death of the ayatollah and most of the Iranian leadership on the first day is pretty much being celebrated in every major capital.

Well said. It should also be noted that approximately 36,500 people have reportedly been killed by the Iranian regime since December. After more than 40 years of repression, brutality, and systemic violence, the true human cost of this regime will never be fully known. Today is a day to be celebrated.

Change is needed in Iran *AND* Trump taking action in an illegal and dangerous way for the wrong reasons.

Yes, I agree.

Normal, cautious Presidents would never have done this, because they would have sought public support (which after Iraq would never have been forthcoming) and would not have liked their odds, given US history in the middle east. It takes a truly impulsive and risk-accepting President, one who believes he is special and immune to making the usual mistakes, to make such an extremely rash decision. Without warning European allies, even - Italy's defense minister is currently in Bahrain with his family, sheltering in a parking garage with other people.

But IF Iran can install a more open-minded regime (let's not hope for a democracy) with minimal bloodshed, plus an agreement on nuclear arms, and be rewarded with a lifting of international sanctions, which will allow it to breathe economically once again... I will give credit where credit is due.

Unfortunately this has very little chance of happening.

No rational state should ever agree to any nuclear constraints anymore. The group of nuclear states are literally the worst states in the world. Because they have no reason to capitulate to international usury or colonialism. Every state should secretly try to manufacture or acquire nukes. It's an existential argument now. Mutually assured destruction doesn't work anymore because nuclear powers don't even threaten each other these days.

I am really surprised how supportive Carney has been given Davos, Canadian retreat from Trump and US tourism, the Gordie Howe bridge, etc. Even those who like him there pulled back after making cracks about annexing Canada, Still, Carney is the liberal leader there.

Is anyone else surprised?

Canada, Germany, UK, France have all been equally supportive. They have sizable Persian diaspora populations, so this is probably smart feel-good politics. I suspect there may be a bit of a quid pro quo on Iran and Ukraine. This is going to majorly impede Russia’s abilities to acquire Iranian drones and missiles
+1 This is my hope

Not so fast. Iran is closing the strait of Hormuz, and the problem is that oil prices will skyrocket. If that goes on for too long, Putin's Russia will make a mint off their oil. People don't quite understand that Russia is a one-trick pony and its only resource is oil. It needs the oil money more than it needs weaponry from abroad, since it can make weaponry and indeed, has transformed its economy into a war economy. The war has dragged into a stalemate at the front because Russia is now squeezed by low oil prices. If they go back up... Russia might win the war.

So we do NOT want a long-drawn out conflict in the Middle East.

That’s why Israel/America invaded Venezuela to get the oil to avoid this type of situation but apparently that isnt going to plan either and the oil isnt thst good over there

No. Venezuela was invaded to make sure Israel had a sure supply of oil outside the ME. US doesn't need a supply outside North America. All foreign military policy has been for the benefit of Israeli jews. Definitely not for America because it's all been negative PR for us.

Islam cannot do democracy.

So unless you plan on mass re-education of 90 million people, a friendly monarchy is the best bet

Can Americans “do” democracy? Which part of the American experiment is going really well right now, pp?

Is it the allegations of the president being part of a pedophile trafficking ring but doing his best to use his attorney general to cover it up?

Is it the president ignoring the constitution and installing tariffs, deploying a federal police force to round up humans in concentration camps and, occasionally, outright murder them without due process?

Is it the general dysfunction of the Congress that can’t seem to ever, ever pass a budget on time?

Or how about the revolving door between lobbying firms and Congress and the fact that lobbyists write our legislation and it almost never has anything to do with what the voting public wants?

Is it the absurd cost of healthcare? The mediocre education system? The rampant gun violence?

Like, what right do you have to judge these other countries that are MUCH OLDER than America? America has broken down after just 250 years. Persia is THOUSANDS of years old. The Islamic republic is a blip of their history, while what is happening to us now seems to be the beginning of a total breakdown.

Drama queen.

We’ve had 2 protesters shot and people are (rightfully) up in arms.

Iran has killed 20k in 2 months.

I’d say our democracy is thriving, relatively speaking.

It was 20K of their own citizens they killed IN TWO DAYS. Absolutely brutal.

And it’s not brutal when the Us or Israel kills 20k of their own citizens in 2 days?

White msnbc liberals have no understanding of the world.

My hope as a Democrat is when we have a chad president like Gavin, he will also be someone of action.

Trump unfortunately is racking up W’s by smartly doing decapitation strikes.

Dems look crazy defending maduro and the ayatollah.

Delusional. It’s amazing how you MAGA have gone from being anti-war to pro-war. You are supporting the same regime change wars you claimed to be against. You are a cult who would support anything Trump does. I voted for him, but I can see he lied about what his agenda was. Excuse me if everyone isn’t thrilled about an illegal war of aggression when the so called President is doing nothing for people at home.

With modern isr and drones, regime change is different than what it previously meant.

Now think of it as a “reset button”

If we don’t like who is in charge, we press a reset button and see what forms next with the signal that if the new leadership doesn’t play ball, they’ll get “reset” as well.

Many Israelis are of Iranian nationality. How do we know it’s not them in the streets? They hate the ayatollah because they had to leave wealth in Tehran in 1979 for poverty in Israel then wealth again in Beverly hills

I mean, is NBC stupid?

Yes.

Let’s face it guys.

America is stupid.

Our media is stupid.

Our voters are stupid.

Our government is stupid.

Less stupid than the Iranian one, apparently.

Can’t wait to hear why you think this.

Self evident, no?

We are going to spend billions and America lives again for someone else’s war while Iran blows up bases around the Middle East and drives up gas prices?

I mean, [b]Iran was just sitting there.
Now we are suckers once again. We did it this time to help support a child predator.

The supreme leader is likely dead and terrorists cells will be activated. I’m most certainly not flying anywhere any time soon.

We right now have the dumbest leadership in the history of the country.

Did you feel the same about Libya?

You already need a “whataboutism?” The war hasn’t lasted a day. This isn’t looking good for you.

Iran is also going to put up more of a fight than any other country we have fought.

lol.

They are out there too, celebrating with the Iranians.

Not relative to where we were a year or so ago.

We are no longer the "shining city on the hill."

We treat women and gays better.

You’re right. The best way to treat women and gays over there is by killing them and their families, loved ones, and exploding their homes

Iran treats gays respectfully?

They pay for transgender surgery: the US doesnt even do that.

I certainly thought gays were mistreated in Iran. .
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-64864132

Gays are mistreated in 90% of the world. Does that mean we go to war with 90% of the world?

Israel has its own homophobia problem with far right government and the current US administration isn’t gay friendly either. Does that mean we should get invaded by Canada, a more liberal country?

I’m so tired of the liberal interventionist argument for war. It’s not worth spilled blood. Did you read the stories of LGBt Gazans? They were heartbreaking. Many were already suffering inside but said that fear and suffering was not alleviated but only compounded when Israel killed their loved ones. One guys story made me cry when I read he wished he said I l love you and kissed before his crush died. None of these people love Hamas as you can imagine but they all suffered regardless because of it.

Many here are pointing out Iranian immigrants here celebrating but don’t you think that means many Iranians inside the country also hate the regime? Does that mean they now deserve a war of the ages just because they’re run by aholes?

An American, Israeli, Arab war against Iran will be disastrously messy for obvious reasons. Two out of the three were dragged in (American, Arabs), and the other is using Arab nations and American army bases as their bodyguard. Incredible
