Maury Capitol Hill

I don't get all the fake outrage about Maury families. Their school is doing great right now, so of course it's perfectly sensible for them to want to keep the way things are. Especially when the proposal doesn't appear very well thought out, so you're basically guaranteed that things will just get worse.

Sure.

What have you done? Have you contacted him about this?

This was so starkly apparent at the Maury community meeting where multiple people started their comments off by saying they support diversity/integration but . . . . .

The amount of dissonance/NIMBYism was something else.

One can support diversity/equity/etc. without rubber stamping every ill-considered proposal put forward.

I also don't think it's a negative to be interested in solutions that could actually help the kids who need it, instead of just shuffling them around to make DCPS look better.

I don't know. You're still near the starburst.

Also really depends on what happens with the schools, which seems at least as likely to be a disaster as not. The Maury name doesn't go far if you're not getting what we think of as "Maury" today.

+1. People seem to assume this new cluster will be halfway between Miner and Maury demographically. It may be for early grades, but UMC families will peel off by the testing grades once they see what halfway between the demographics look like test score-wise.

Also, folks are ignoring that the richest part of the Maury boundary will now have proximity preference to Ludlow Taylor from PK3-1st/2nd & so will be able to leave by PK4 or K. Peabody/Watkins can tell you how the richest part of your IB having proximity preference to more stable schools goes…

These days you don't even need proximity preference. Most Hill schools have lots of OOB spots available.

Lots of OOB spots doesn’t mean most kids get in or even close (esp in the younger grades). You need proximity (or some other) preference to guarantee getting in until like 5th grade. Proximity preference you can plan on it; no preference and you need some amount of luck.

Not at Maury. But this is unfair. DCPS is a category 5 shitstorm in general with a few bright spots, Maury being one of them. It’s not NIMBYism to oppose what appears to be a DCPS proposal backed by zero actual thought that is almost guaranteed to make Maury a lot worse academically and everyone’s life more difficult logistically.

Anything to report from the DME Advisory Committee meeting tonight?

Also, when the only real reason to buy in the Maury boundary is Maury, how can you not expect NIMBYism about Maury?? I don’t even live in that boundary and yet I can understand this?

Total troll comment. I’ve been on every meeting. No one has started a question with this “but” framing.

Simply combining schools with no further information re: how this combination helps every child access high quality education deserves to be questioned!!! DME’s job is to make all schools high quality, and it has failed at doing that thus far. It’s 100% reasonable to ask them how they think this idea will change things. It’s 100% frightening to hear that they have NO ANSWERS!

Nobody is going to listen to the whole recording just because you posted here. Could you pinpoint the exact minute/second markers where people use "but" framing? This simply makes you sound like a troll even more.

I didn't post exact minutes so that people can listen and draw their own conclusions. Up to you and others if you want to listen to the source material. Treat it like a podcast and listen while you're doing whatever.

This 100% proves you're a troll. First making up some baseless accusations about what Maury parent said and then not backing it up with any proof. Nobody is going to listen to hours of tape just to refute your blatant lies.

Agreed. I can’t believe this is a controversial opinion.
