Lots of clubs have had kids change clubs in the last few years. Not just Husel. And this has also happened in some of the bigger regional clubs, like in Richmond and VA beach. It's fairly common.

There is not a lot of "tea" to spill. One coach at the younger level (U12 or 14) moved. And a second in that bracket left to take their kid to Freedom, which is one of the best if not the best in the area. When they left, that younger team sort of fell apart b/c the parents liked those coaches. So they took their kids to other clubs (and their older, already committed siblings went with them. I'm guessing that was mostly for convenience). Most went to Wolves and that is because the O'Connell Coach consolidated and took all those players from Husel and went to Wolves. Look at the rosters. They were with Husel and now with Wolves (all O'Connell players). That was something like 8 players across age groups.

A few others have left since then for whatever reason (whether panicking that some left, wanting more recruiting opportunities, or what have you). But, they've also gotten in some new players, some who are quite good, who will now have a chance to play in the top spots. And they've gotten some new very good and accomplished coaches coming on board. And the Director, who has had some issues in the past (which I'd agree with) is now taking stock and making some adjustments, which is a good thing.

Are you a Husel parent? Husel has not updated their roster but you seem to know new girls joined.

Not updating the roster is a red flag for me. One, it says the director isn’t taking care of the fine details and two, it makes them look dishonest.

My daughter never played for Husel. We choose to look elsewhere because after doing my homework I saw too many problems with the club. Now with others leaving, I am even more sure we made the right choice.

Why did the O’Connell coach encourage players to leave Husel?

I’m not sure if you saying u10/u12 teams falling apart led the O’Connell players to leave Husel and follow their younger siblings.

Id like to know the answer to this question as well

Seems like it can’t be a good reason based on the PP not including the reason. I know what I’ve heard is negative.

She didn’t encourage anyone to leave. Everyone did it on their own after being treated like dirt again and again. Husel owner was not helpful getting children committed to colleges. She was helpful with the first batch of college age kids, but then she got burned by a couple of kids and threw in the towel on helping anyone else. Parents saw this and decided they had had enough.
Talk about running a very good program into the ground.

What about the 14u wolves that moved to Next Level, what happened there? Or better coaching at Next Level?

I keep hearing about players leaving clubs because the coaches/directors are not helping them enough with recruiting. What is the expectation players/parents have of the club? I have always looked for a club that helps my kiddo improve, goes to competitive tournaments and talks to us if we have questions about camps/recruiting/etc. But I don’t expect my club coaches/directors to be making calls and marketing my kid. This is something the player has to do - market themselves. How much pull does a club director/coach have with a college coach? I would think college coaches would get annoyed if a club director/coach kept sending them players (especially if the players were not strong enough). Maybe I am completely wrong and should expect more of my club??

Different girls thrive in different environments. I feel like this is always missing from these “which club is best” discussions. Kids have different coaching styles they respond to, different goals, and different levels of development. Not every girl is a superstar, but they might still want to play field hockey.

To me it looks like the Wolves roster sizes have simply gotten out of control. I count 29 girls on each their u16 and u19 teams and they only field one team per age group. I also sense they do not prioritize shared playing time. I could imagine a good complement of girls that are at the lower end of such large teams preferring a club with 3-4 travel teams plus development teams at each age group.

If you are a top player in your age group Wolves might be a fine fit. If you are not, you might consider shifting.

I agree with your first statement about some girls thrive in one environment while others thrive in another.

However, concerning roster size, if you look at the NITQ locations that were put out recently for u19, you will see Wolves has 3, which seems spot on for 29 players. I’ll add, Warhawks has 3, Next Level has 6, Freedom has 7, Hammers has 2, Metro has 3, Xtreme has 2, Husel has 1. Its possible some of these clubs have girls that will not be on an NITQ team because they may not have been able to get enough spots.

There are times when a club will have larger team rosters due to number of players and times they will have smaller team rosters due to number of players. It’s just the way it is as players come and go from one year to the next. Some coaches prefer small teams, while others prefer large teams, which can be good or bad. Small teams means lots of playing time, but if someone is hurt or away it can be a problem. Larger teams mean less playing time, but if someone is hurt or away the team is not impacted. I have seen small and large teams at every club so I’m not pointing the finger at anyone.

As a parent of 3 DI athlete's (boys and girls), from my experience relationships matter and a coach that is supportive is impactful. As an example, when going to camps at colleges being in the top or recruited group matters. Coaches can help get the player in that group, from there it’s up to the athlete. club coaches can have relationships that help get kids on a radar. As you get into recruiting you will see there are LOTS of players that are similarly skilled and the club coach advocating can help.

What is particularly insidious about the Husel director is that she uses that in a negative way. Calling college coaches to get scholarships removed when player leaves her club or only helping certain players she deems worthy, threatening to “bury” players who contemplate leaving. She is also known for yelling at parents. head the warnings, once you join and then decide to go another direction she will be vindictive.

Yes, club coaches can help advocate for a player. They can speak to more than just the play a college coach may see in a highlight video or a clinic. At the same time, having a club coach with a bad reputation can possibly be a negative as colleges don’t want to deal with that.

Every one of those kids who left will tell you they were "invited" to go with her and her kids. Is "invited" the same as "encouraged"? Regardless of what you, they, or anyone else thinks of Husel, yes, the exit was coordinated.
