I keep hearing about players leaving clubs because the coaches/directors are not helping them enough with recruiting. What is the expectation players/parents have of the club? I have always looked for a club that helps my kiddo improve, goes to competitive tournaments and talks to us if we have questions about camps/recruiting/etc. But I don’t expect my club coaches/directors to be making calls and marketing my kid. This is something the player has to do - market themselves. How much pull does a club director/coach have with a college coach? I would think college coaches would get annoyed if a club director/coach kept sending them players (especially if the players were not strong enough). Maybe I am completely wrong and should expect more of my club??
As a parent of 3 DI athlete's (boys and girls), from my experience relationships matter and a coach that is supportive is impactful. As an example, when going to camps at colleges being in the top or recruited group matters. Coaches can help get the player in that group, from there it’s up to the athlete. club coaches can have relationships that help get kids on a radar. As you get into recruiting you will see there are LOTS of players that are similarly skilled and the club coach advocating can help. What is particularly insidious about the Husel director is that she uses that in a negative way. Calling college coaches to get scholarships removed when player leaves her club or only helping certain players she deems worthy, threatening to “bury” players who contemplate leaving. She is also known for yelling at parents. head the warnings, once you join and then decide to go another direction she will be vindictive.
