| Maybe it's already in the thread, but isn't there some sense in several Ds giving votes to McCarthy for concessions instead of him bowing to the RW? |
Would you trust any concession your received from McCarthy? I wouldn't. |
| “Thank God they weren’t in the majority on January 6,” Nancy Pelosi told reporters, “because that was the day you had to be organized to stave off what was happening, to save our democracy, to certify the election of the president.” |
No, because as much as it would be great to have a centrist coalition to block the far right, the issue is that no one trusts rank and file Republicans to honor any concessions made for the Speakership. McCarthy does not have much authority over his fellow Republicans, therefore any deal he makes with Democrats would be just him and a few colleagues: it's too risky, even though from a theoretical numbers perspective, it could be enough for a majority. |
If only Nancy had approved those 10,000 (or was it 20,000?) troops, we wouldn't be talking about any January 6. /s |
If he’s not Speaker his PAC won’t be pulling in any money. |
JFC, for the last time, this is not Democrats problem to solve! News flash, KM IS RW! He’s giving the bomb throwers everything they’ve asked for. Stop asking Dems to clean up GOP sh!t. Again, any Rs who want to govern can reach out to Jeffries. Until then, we can all see who are the grownups and who are the children. Next election, vote accordingly. |
Not suggesting in any way that it's the D's problem to solve, but that the Ds could capitalize on the chaos to secure committee seats, debt ceiling votes, whatever else. I think Pelosi is right and had the Rs been the leaders during 1/6, we would not be a (version of a) democracy today. We all have to live here for the next 2 years, and I don't want to just see who the adults are - I want a functioning government that can at the very least ensure our country continues to exist. |
This. In November 2024, no one will remember that the Democrats were the grownups in the room to end the vote. The average American does not care about this chaos. The concessions McCarthy is making is weakening the Speaker's role. The Democrats will benefit from this. |
We all lose when whoever is speaker refuses to raise the debt ceiling creating global economic chaos that benefits the Russians and China. THAT is what this is all about. Which is why the Dems should coalesce with whatever sane repiublicans are left to get someone in there who will do the bare minumum not to destroy our country and the global economy. |
They wouldn’t secure any of those things. All those things require separate House votes, not dictates of the Speaker. Everything the House does for the next two years will require a separate vote to come to the floor. |
So what do you think should happen to get the gov functioning because choosing a Speaker is not the role of the minority. |
That's like saying he's the most sober alcoholic. |
Well it will benefit the Democrats if the voters finally throw out the anti govt bomb throwers. They will y realize that in fact.. they do need a functioning government. |
