Noob Question about State Cups

Anonymous
I'm not an active soccer parent in terms of the structure, leagues, etc. Our coach mentioned we would be playing in the state cup and last night a friend of mine retweeted the state cup brackets so naturally I took a look and to my surprise we weren't anywhere to be found. After some digging, I found the VPL (son's league) state cup which looks like a mini tournament among the clubs within the league. So my question is, why bother to have 2 outside of money? The VYSA one seems to have a mix of teams from different leagues which seems a bit more legit.

Not trashing any of the tournaments, just trying to understand the landscape.

Both State Cups are simply a tourney.

The NPL State Cup is new and started last year and yes is full of NPL teams. VYSA teams are of course welcome to register but they don't, well, frankly because theirs is the established State Cup and all of that.

The VYSA State Cup, teams must qualify for. But you also have to register to qualify. Your kids team may have done both and neither.

I will now open the floor to the general State Cup bashing that is about to commence.

They’re both just tournaments. DA/ECNL teams don’t play in either so they’ve sort of lost their luster to the soccer snob parents. Both are fun for the kids though!

Just a money grab and should be considered a stretched out tournament. VPL "state" cup is nothing more than doubling up league play because as you eluded to, it's nothing more than the same teams that are in the league.

Defeats the purpose of these types of games, Champion's Cup would not be the same if it were just teams from a singular league, instead you get to watch EPL teams play La Liga, etc. I vote for VYSA just because there is a more even blend of teams across the state.

It's fun for the kiddos, the VPL one is kind of a rip off version and I'm still confused why they even bothered. If you follow the bread crumbs, it goes back to US Club soccer vs US Youth Soccer. Pissing match.

OP here, good to know we are in the rip off version. But that's ok by me, I saw some of the powerhouse clubs on the VYSA brackets and we probably not fair well.

DA teams don't play in the State Cup. ECNL teams do--if they choose to and can make it in. Both McLean and BRYC have teams in the VYSA spring state cup.

ECNL teams do not play in State Cup in the HS ages because the fall ECNL season is to packed with league games in order to accommodate the spring HS soccer season.

Any tournament could be called a money grab. The kids enjoy playing single elimination. Get over yourself.

The NPL pool is just smaller, no big deal. ABGC, sorry, *VILLAREAL*, could beat most of the teams in the VYSA brackets. Interesting, SYC's teams are in the VYSA State Cup. Their 2006 boys won last year, and I expect all of their teams to be competitive.

So it begins...

I always chuckle when parents from VPL teams refer to their league cup as a "state cup." What's next ODSL and NCSL will have their own "state cups?"

Lol Villarreal? Might be able to get past the first 2 rounds but that’s it.

This post is so dumb that it hurts. So they get past the first two rounds...In most cases that puts them in the semifinals, worst case the quarterfinals. Since you seem to struggle with how this works, that means top 8 or top 4.
