| I have a lot of weight to lose. Probably 40 - 50 lbs. I am being healthy and addressing both diet and exercise and losing slowly while making lifestyle changes. My question is for people taking this route, when did you plateau? Do people usually plateau after a certain amount (like 15 lbs) or when they are close to their healthy weight? Does your body lose a certain percentage and then put on the brakes? Is there any science to this or is it all individual? |
| I'm not a plateau, but my loss has decreased dramatically. Currently I'm losing 1/2 lb per week, previously it was 2-2.5. I'm happy with that, even though it will take a long time to lose the last 14lbs. I'm 4lbs from a healthy BMI. I'll get there eventually. |
| Just keep going. Once you lose the first 20 lbs or so you may need to cut a few more cals since your lower body weight now requires less calories to maintain. Just keep staying consistent and results will come in time! |

Honestly, I think a lot of "plateaus" are really just from becoming more lax over time. You get comfortable and feel good at your new weight and don't track calories or portions closely. If you keep tracking closely and keep a calorie deficit then you shouldn't hit a plateau or point where you stop losing completely.
Yes, weight loss tends to slow down as you have less weight to lose and initially you are losing a good about of bloat/water weight. Also like pp said, as you lose weight your calorie needs will also decrease. If you always eat based on your goal weight then you won't have to adjust this number to keep losing, but the rate will slow down because the calorie deficit won't be as large. |
+1. My weight loss has been consistent when I was consistently on my diet and exercise routine. I have "fake" plateaus so to speak, during my period, but afterwards, it's back to normal, and I still lose the weight that I'm supposed to lose. When I was at a healthy weight and about 20lbs over the lowest BMI ( for healthy weight), I plateaued because I became lax and at that point it seems like I've lost all the extra pounds that I needed to lose. Anything more would have made me look sick. |
| Why are you not worried about losing your first 5 to 10lb? |
|
Plus 1 for other PPs. There is no such thing as plateau. When you lose 15 to 20lb, you start to feel healthy and relaxed. So you let yourself cheat here and there until you gain 5lb. Then you are back on track.
You should consider 16:8 IFs. |
