The change is not getting made because ECNL has no authorization to make the change in 2025. For those that argue that they should just do it --- they could. And give up a lot of capital that they want for other things. This issue is not at all important to ECNL. It is a want and not a need. In terms of the prep for the change -- it is cutting it close to do this by 2026 but it is doable. 2025 was never int he cards.
Two full years of prep went into the last switch.

Well said! If ECNL wanted this change so bad they would/could have done this a long time ago. Same with addressing trapped player issues. They will not risk hurting their bottom line to do anything outside the norm. Once the vast majority of clubs and leagues get on board they can transition with everyone. Until that happens no one is changing anything.

it will not hurt their bottom line...lmao. if you want to play college soccer especially D1 you go to ECNL. kids aren't going to stop playing ecnl because of the school year change. such dumb parents. we need smarter parents.

Then why hasn’t ECNL switched back already or helped trapped players? Since you’re so smart?

8th grade trapped players can be rostered, up to two per game, in the year under them. It's still lame and each club can implement this however.

It’s a crap situation. I had one of those trapped 8th graders that played for the age group below and the coaches loved her but the parents and players hated her presence. She took the playtime from current players. If she was permanently rostered on that team (SY instead of BY) it would have been such a great situation for her.

Yes but ecnl leagues in California do not have games during the high school season so they can be rostered for two games only when high school is in session but there are no league games or showcases to play in. So it’s a catch 22.

Our 2012 ECNL team has 7 trapped players. No way all 7 players can get a quality spring season when only 2 trapped players can play games while the rest of their 2012 team competes during a high school season.

For 2012s in 6th grade, those 7 players are not trapped at all. Trapped players are 8th graders (whose BY teammates are in 9th grade) and again in 11th. This won't be an issue for them until 8th grade and 11th grade.

It hasn’t been a problem as many ECNL clubs don’t tell players about the rule because they don’t want to deal with parents complaining. Also 2012 players “if” ECNL changes the ages up will never be trapped. Next years Q3/4 2011s would be the last group.

Totally get how trapped players work…this is during the 8th trap. They have an ecnl spring season this year. There will be 7 during the 8th trap and our club keeps 18 on the roster. There is no way for them to play many games with the younger group, if at all.

Not sure why you're worried about a trap that won't happen until the 2026-27 season, especially where it seems something will change by that season? And especially where you don't even know who will still be on the team by then. ECNL teams often drastically change between U13 and 15.

It’s not a worry, it’s a fact. There are definitely plenty of other 2011 teams with similar numbers that are SOL for the 2025/26 season.

alrighty the PP if not you specifically asked about an age group this doesn't impact so I'm not sure what fact this is a reference to

The waiver stuff a few pages back. Someone mentioned u13-u15. why not u16 for next year (2025/2026)? this is the age group that was trapped for this Fall (boys 2010 but in 8th grade). so they continue to get screwed? trapped this year and no waiver opportunity next?! please tell me that is not accurate.

Trapped players are only 8th graders who are left behind when teammates play high school. So now that they are no longer trapped there is no reason to give them a waiver.

The waiver isn’t to help kids with RAE it’s to help the age groups that are affected by trapped players.

But as of now there is no indication of a waiver system. From what I heard age groups will stay the same next year no waivers. 25/26 US Club/USYS/AYSO may adjust tournament rules to allow for SY teams. Q3/4 can guest play for tournaments. I’m not sure if ECNL will apply this to their showcases as well. That may be where the waiver stuff is coming from.

Not to quibble, but doesn’t the ‘trapped’ concept apply to kids that don’t graduate with the bulk of their team as well?
