I’m pretty sure when referring to trapped players it is only 8th graders who are left behind for high school. |
| This seems like a good idea to me! |
Not really, she gets to do college recruiting and showcases a full year ahead of school year classmates. So many trapped players are committing to schools at the earliest times. This is a big silver lining. |
If we are talking about ECNL girl players I have found in my opinion that very few players are head and shoulders above everyone else. The elite girls who are Q3/4 doesn’t matter if they are trapped because they are great. But they have to be looked at as the exception not the rule. Meaning just because some girls get looked at early doesn’t mean it works out for every girls like that. Not every girl who plays ECNL is elite and there are levels of play amongst teams and players within the league. I would guarantee if you ask all the Q3/4 girls and parents which team they want to showcase with it would be their school year team. Not easy to be recruited either way. |

I don’t understand why people refuse to believe being a trapped player is a problem. Spin it all you want, but the fact still remains that trapped players in 8th and 12th grade lose the ability to play with their team. It’s a problem that didn’t exit prior to changing the BY and it’s a problem that can easily be fixed by moving back to school year. If you don’t see it, then you’re blinded by your own perceived advantage your kid may have in the current BY system.
And just like Jan-April BY parents say “if you’re good, you’re good and it doesn’t matter when you’re born!” To that I saw - you’re right! So why do you care so much about changing back to SY if Sally and Johnny are already so good? Ohh, that’s right - it does make a difference. |
We are kicking a dead horse with this RAE argument because people will argue for what’s in their best interest. BY has more problems for a majority of kids than SY. But now it’s up to leagues to decide if the issues are really that big of deal when you zoom out and away from personal preferences. We will all know by end of February/ early March what the plan will be going forward. |
I would agree with this, my daughters ECNL team had a friendly with our local ODP team and at least 5 girls from the ECNL team did not get selected during tryouts. We ended up “winning” the friends if that’s even a thing. But it showed coaches tend to look for their preference in skill set because soccer is not easy to judge who’s actually a better player. This is why people argue for SY/BY because getting recruited is tough and you will take the slightest advantage you can. |
| I have a question about the statement above about BY ecnl league games but guest players/SY tournaments for 25/26. If numbers of trapped players don’t match up and rosters are at 18, how could that system work? My daughter is trapped and she’s the only one on her ecnl team, but there are 5 trapped players on the age group above. My kid guest playing SY tournaments only opens up one spot on the roster for those 5 older trapped players to guest on her Ecnl team. What happens to the other 4 older players? There’s no room on the roster for them. |
I’m not the poster but it says they are not sure about ECNL adding this rule for showcases. If US club adds this rule it would work like any other tournament when a team uses guest players. Meaning if your team has 18 players your team/coach probably will not use additional players. Unless they decide to make a tournament team within the club meaning 2011 Q3/4 players will play with 2012s and the 2012 Q3/4 would play tournaments with the 2013s. This will be up to each club and team to decide on. Not a mandatory thing. |
Nothing has been finalized yet. But that’s up to each team to figure out if that is approved. Maybe they have tournament teams and league teams. So some kids on your roster would not be invited to some tournaments. If the plan is to goto SY they won’t be to concerned about hurting parents feelings if the players will eventually not be on that team. |
| It would be interesting if ecnl decided to allow National Championships to play as SY teams this year |
ECNL leadership does not think this is a big issue. |
Yes I agree, if they thought it was a big issue they would have addressed it years ago. It is seen more as an annoyance than a problem. But I heard ECNL does talk with college coaches and they prefer school year showcases as it makes it easier for them. Not saying coaches can’t figure it out as that’s what they’ve been doing. But if the plan is to go back to SY I’m sure ECNL isn’t going to fight it. |
I heard college coaches don't really care + player ability is all that matters. But I was chatting with. D1 COACH so what do I know. Have fun... |
Sample size of 1 congrats! |
