Payment for weekend sitter?

Anonymous
Hi- We are wondering what the rate is for overnight babysitters? Our niece is babysitting our two girls (8 and 10 years old) from after school Friday until Sunday at lunchtime. What is a fair payment for this?

$300.

unless you are very rich $300 is too much. The kids are 8 & 10 and don't need much watching except helping with meals. I would say $100. I'd pay more if they were like 4 & 6 for instance.

For 48 hours? So approximately $2 an hour. Good luck with that.

It's not 48 hours, they will sleep at night and it's not like she has to get up in the middle of the night to check an 8 or 10 year old. Also it depends on the relationship with their cousin/niece. If she is very close with her cousins and usually spends time in their house or vice versa it's different than hiring an outside baby sitter.

It’s not just the time working. It’s giving up the entire weekend for babysitting.

So she can leave and go home at night then? Come back in time for breakfast?

If you want her to be available again and not complain to family how stingy you are, pay what you would pay a sitter. I would pay an hourly rate for he awake hours and then $ flat rate of 50-$100 for the overnights.

Assuming an hourly rate of $10 an hour and $50 for overnight ( which is on the low end)

4pm on Friday until 12 noon on Sunday would be $360.
Hourly until 10pm each night and starting again at 7am. $50 for each overnight.

You are nuts. This would be ,$100/day--not even $10/hr. I would give her $500-$600 for three days. Three days of full time child care is a lot and I would make it worth her while.

It's her niece! She is family, not an employee, and most responses here are absurd. I house sat and baby Sat 2nd cousins for weekends for no payment when I was in my early 20s. If you think she is expecting payment, ask her or ask her mom what is reasonable. A token payment would probably be well received, but definitely discuss it with her up front. And, you can say you want to come to something reasonable for both, so that if you and she do it again you are both comfortable.

Relatives should not be paid? No wonder no one in your family helps you. Work is work. Pay!

$350 - She’s giving up her weekend and that’s a lot of babysitting hours. Your kids may be angels but unless they are entirely self-sufficient teenagers you still need to pay a fair rate.

We just agreed to $300 for Friday night through Sunday afternoon.
