Would you be worried about a male teacher in a pre-k?

I am looking at preschools and one that I like has a male teacher. Am I being a bigot to be somewhat worried about this? It is a Catholic preschool, so maybe my radar is being wrongly set off based on the Catholic clergy scandals.

Yes, you are being a bigot.

I would trust my instincts but, as a rule, no.

Yes I would.

One of my kids' best preschool teachers is a male. A quality program has mechanisms in place to protect children and staff (e.g., opposite sex bathroom policies, multiple teachers in a room etc.).

Yes.

I'd think it was awesome!

My son has a preschool teacher this year who is male. He's young and plays with them and all of the kids love him. Would I want him changing my kid's diaper, no.

I would not be worried. There is one in my DS's preschool and he is awesome. He connects so well with little kids. My DS has had some difficult moments (meltdowns, some anxiety) and he is one of the few that can reach him when he's in the middle of this. Really rethink your prejudices.

No, not as long as all staff (abuse can happen from women) are properly screened and regularly monitored.

It would depend on the person.

I’m a former director and one of the best teachers I know is male.

But some individuals would set off my radar.

Wasn't one of DCPS recent Teachers of the Year, Mr. Jere, who has been a PK4 and PK3 teacher at SWS?

There's a DCPS PK4 teacher who has been teaching PK4 and K for almost 40 years. I know students whose parents also had him! He's a gem. And a male.

Trust your gut. I'm usually extra aware if my DC has a male teacher. But I try to be reasonable about it.

In a Catholic school? yes. They have protected far too many molesters
