Would you be worried about a male teacher in a pre-k?

There's a great male Pk4 teacher at an ARL preschool. WHen he joined I was not pleased but he's been there two or 3 years now, my girl loved him and the school is designed so that bad stuff can't happen. In fact, most of the schools I toured were designed similarily.

No, I wouldn't. What matters to me is that the program is set up with appropriate safeguards. At our preK, no teacher could ever be alone with a student out of eyesight and earshot of another adult. And I listened carefully to what my kid told me about her day, and asked questions, and talked generally about how adults should never ask a kid to keep secrets from their parents, and there was never anything that set off any alarms.

I think it's so sad that people can't imagine why a man would want to teach preschoolers. It's a delightful age, and I know men who genuinely enjoy being around little kids. They can be wonderful teachers and caregivers. And most men never abuse anyone. To me, what's more important is the systems in place to prevent abuse and to respond to it quickly.

+1. In a quality program, the staffing model and setup of the space would mean a single teacher is never left in a situation where this could realistically happen.

The only exception would be if you were picking up your kids after the standard pickup time, but you shouldn't be doing that anyway.

Which preschool? The one I'm considering is in Arlington

It's simply USUALLY a male who is the criminal sexuality assaulting a child.

A woman molesting a young child? No. Not typically.
If anything she's after an adolescent boy, and that's extremely rare.

The COMMON thing is for a man to "groom" either a boy or girl child, and then assault them.

This is HORRIFIC. Parent BEWARE!!

I find this thread really unbelievable and sad. You are all judging someone based on their sex and presume them all guilty for a few. I think male teachers for young kids are important because caring for children shouldn't be see as a woman's job. For both little girls and boys.

And the person who said men who work at a Catholic school for peanuts is not normal is really reaching. So it is ok for women to be paid poorly because they are women and "only pre-school" teachers? Wow...what if society went back to saying woman can't be lawyers or doctors....why would a "normal" woman want to do that? Shouldn't they be home or become teachers, secretaries or nurses?

When my kids were younger they had male teachers and it was fine. My DH teaches art to ages pre-K to 8th grade in wait for it....a Catholic school! He is a wonderful caring person who would never harm any child.

So I understand that means you want the male teachers to never help a girl in the bathroom or change her diaper.

So... umm...that means that no boys should ever get diaper changes if there are only female teachers (which is 99.9% the way it is) and also any boys who have a toileting accident shouldn't have anyone help them change their clothing, etc. because, again, most teachers are female.

Sucks to be a male in that school! Guess all the parents just come and change their boys every 3 hours? And pick up their boys if they have an accident?

Think about it.

And to add on to above, my daughter's Male teacher helps change her for swimming and when she has accidents. But in the middle of a big open room with at least one but usually 2 other teachers. Because that us school policy...for both make and female teachers. POLICY does not mean they get put of doing the work. It means they have adults in the room for everyone's safety.

Maybe use a dictionary or google if you don't understand words.

Your daughter's male teacher changes her for swimming and accidents - hell nawl. Check yourself, Mom. This is a no go!

So question for those of you opposed to male teachers: would you pull your kid out of a center if they hired a male teacher for your kid's classroom?

What the hell is wrong with you?

I think people are concerned because, in a preschool setting, those teachers might be changing diapers, taking kids to bathroom, changing their clothes/bathing suits.

Some of the best teachers I have ever worked with have been men. I trust male teachers. I don't trust the Catholic Church to protect children

There's no reason to leave your child alone with a clergy.
Are you aware how many people were " trusting" the teacher pedophiles in recent years?
