| Why do some drivers turning left (from two lane road onto four lane road with no arrow just regular stop light) think they have the right of way to the people turning right on the same road from the opposite direction? Meaning we are both turning to travel the same direction but they think they can go before me or worse, at the same time as me, making a left when I am making a right. With no green arrow what makes these people think they can go? |
| I don't know but I almost got hit by someone doing this. They were turning left out of a parking lot and I was turning right from a road. |
| If you are both turning onto a four lane road that means there are 2 lanes of travel in the direction you are turning. The car turning right must turn into the curb lane. The car turning left must turn into the left lane. So actually you can both turn at the same time. The challenge is that very few people actually turn into the lane they are legally supposed to turn into. If there is only one lane of traffic that you are both turning into then the person turning right legally has the right of way. Of course that doesn't matter if the person turning left is a jerk. |
I understand the technical explanation but I don't think it is legal or safe. The person turning right still has the right of way in this scenario. |
PP here. We were turning onto a road with only one lane going in each direction. |
No, it is legal and safe if they both turn together and only use the correct lane. Of course, you have a lot of people who make wide turns into the "wrong" lane (think of all the people who turn onto a road with two lanes of traffic, thinking they only need one lane, and swing over into the other one) and drive huge vehicles nowadays on narrow streets. |
The law says you get the curb lane. Are you turning right into another lane. If so you are breaking the law. |
No I am not however I am going to have to research this because it is nearly impossible around here to bum rush an intersection like this with cars trying to turn into the left land and curb lane at the same time - the act of turning itself causes the vehicle to impede on the other lane. Meaning someone has to give, you cannot play chicken like this. My argument is that without an arrow then the person making the right still has the right of way. There is no law that says we should all turn at the same time from opposite directions into the desired travel lane. |
Exactly. You can both turn at the same time, as long as you turn into the correct lane. Changing lanes in the middle of the intersection is super unsafe and illegal. |
Yes there is a law, actually even if there are not cars and you do not take the curb lane you could get a ticket. I agree that others make it unsafe ... just like you don't walk into a crosswalk without pausing even if you have the right of way... because the car will always win. |
| The lane is not lawfully available to them while I am turning because my vehicle will briefly occupy part of that lane (same will happen to them) - the question is, who goes first - I argue the person making the left, without an arrow, never has the right of way. |

Why don't you just turn right into the curb lane and keep going. Why does it matter what others do in other lanes. You have a lane and you turn into it. The cars have been waiting for a chance to turn and they can see you turn. You clearly don't scare them and they shouldn't scare you.
I bet you hit the curb with your tires. |
No no, they are not waiting for their chance at all. If they were I wouldn't be posting. They are turning at the same time as if they have the right of way. If I just turn into the curb lane without regard for them one of us is going to have damage, either I am going to have front end driver side damage or they will have front end passenger side damage because we will both occupy the same space briefly while turning and straightening out in the lane (relatively close quarters here) - most driver do wait their chance to make the left because that is what is safe. I am talking about the few that don't. |
You need to learn how to turn into your lane. If you can't you are wrong. You can't go into their lane. You have the right of way in your lane only. If they turn into their lane and are not in your lane and you hit them because you turn wide or your car is too big, you are at fault. |
