What non political controversial position do you hold?

1. Never wake a sleeping baby to feed.

2. After 6 weeks or so, babies need to be sleep trained. Tending to a baby’s every peep during the night is only something a mom to few children and responsibilities can manage. It’s truly not necessary to stay up all night with your three month old baby. In fact, it’s not good for the baby.

3. A lot of babies don’t sleep well now because of “back to sleep,” which probably isn’t even necessary if you’re not poor, don’t smoke and don’t leave pillows in the crib. If there truly was a strong relationship between back sleeping and SIDS, then people would have figured this out before 1995.

4. A lot of men don’t contribute enough at home because men are lazy and will let women do all of the work. If you SAHM and don’t leave the house for extended periods of time, it’s not surprising you’re the default parent. You did this to yourself.

5. The food in NYC is not that great. NYC is overrated in general.

6. Parental leave is better in European countries because women have fewer options to stay home due to the higher COL and cultural norms like not sharing finances with a partner. Also, it’s cheaper for these governments to hand out a measly $200-300 a week and encourage women to stay home than pay for childcare with high labor costs. I’d be insulted to be expected to stay home for a year with each kid (BORING) for an annual salary of around $20k. I prefer my 12 weeks of unpaid leave and higher salary in the US.

7. Daycare is bad for babies. Babies need a primary caregiver and not to share one with 3-5 other babies.

8. Kids don’t need snacks. Ever. Truly unnecessary.

9. Having kids isn’t fun and it’s not supposed to be. It’s a form of work.

10. The more money a city spends on the homeless, the more homeless the city will have.

PP, you're my DCUM best friend. +1000000 on #8. I was gobsmacked when I saw parents bring junk food snacks to feed their small kids on the Metro after leaving the house and just having had breakfast.

We have this problem at my school all the time. Parents think because their kid is slow at reading or math that they have a SN. That’s not how it works. Some kids are just slow at reading or math. That’s all. And that doesn’t qualify you for special services. Sorry.

There is literally nothing in that post that puts down children with difficulties in reading or math. Absolutely nothing derogatory was said.

You don’t think it derogatory to say dyslexic children are just slow not SN?!

That’s not what was said AT ALL.

You said many don’t want to say their kids are average intelligence so they say they are SN.

But a huge amount of studied show high/average IQ and dyslexia are treated in school as stupid. Same with ADHD.

So your saying it’s not derogatory to say these kids are “just slow”?

That poster wasn’t me. But it sounds like she was saying not every slow reader deserves a diagnosis. Sometimes a slow reader is just…a slow reader. Same with math.
My daughter (15) is awful at math. So we got her a tutor. I’m pretty sure if we went looking for a diagnosis we would find one. But she doesn’t need a label - she just needs help in math. Because she’s really not good at it.

+1. There’s a difference in kids who have special needs and kids who just aren’t good at math. Both kids may be great at other things. Upper middle class parents just need to label their “not good at math” kid. Maybe they just don’t take to math!

Most kids bad at math should just be labeled as “kids with teachers who cant teachers math”. Hence the need for a tutor.

+1, this doesn't improve at the college level

Apparently, this is a controversial position.

You are confusing sex with gender. Your sex is assigned at birth and is what is located between your legs. Gender is a social construct. It is in your brain. Many cultures throughout history have had 3,4, and even 5 different genders.

Then we need to base bathrooms, sports, etc on sex and not gender. Clears up a lot of confusion.

So you want this guy in the girl's bathroom?

It’s very controversial these days actually. I have lots of friends who would shun me if they knew I held that opinion.

This makes no sense. It’s a wish, not a controversy. And who would shun someone for wanting a cure for autism? Don’t we all want that?

It’s unnecessary. The child should come to dinner hungry. They need to learn hunger cues and also don’t need to associate every event with eating. There’s no reason a child needs grapes and crackers at 3 PM.

Then we need to pay math teachers a lot more than other teachers. Right now they are paid on the same scale as the PE teachers and the history teacher, even though the opportunity cost is vastly different.

Maybe? Millions of babies are sleeping on their backs and disrupting sleep for a very minor reduction in SIDS. The reduction could just as well be that so many fewer people now smoke cigarettes. They even found out recently that SIDS is due to a medical issue the baby is born with. Look I’ll put my baby on its back like every other parent does, but I’m not convinced we are doing much besides keeping our babies from sleeping. Babies slept on their stomachs all throughout history.
