We have this problem at my school all the time. Parents think because their kid is slow at reading or math that they have a SN. That’s not how it works. Some kids are just slow at reading or math. That’s all. And that doesn’t qualify you for special services. Sorry.

A new DCUM low - putting down children with difficulty reading and writing for requesting help. OMFG. Go to hell

There is literally nothing in that post that puts down children with difficulties in reading or math. Absolutely nothing derogatory was said.

You don’t think it derogatory to say dyslexic children are just slow not SN?!

That’s not what was said AT ALL.

+1 what??

Everyone is either looking to be offended, or looking to justify their kids diagnosis.

You said many don’t want to say their kids are average intelligence so they say they are SN.

But a huge amount of studied show high/average IQ and dyslexia are treated in school as stupid. Same with ADHD.

So your saying it’s not derogatory to say these kids are “just slow”?

That poster wasn’t me. But it sounds like she was saying not every slow reader deserves a diagnosis. Sometimes a slow reader is just…a slow reader. Same with math.
My daughter (15) is awful at math. So we got her a tutor. I’m pretty sure if we went looking for a diagnosis we would find one. But she doesn’t need a label - she just needs help in math. Because she’s really not good at it.

+1. There’s a difference in kids who have special needs and kids who just aren’t good at math. Both kids may be great at other things. Upper middle class parents just need to label their “not good at math” kid. Maybe they just don’t take to math!

1. Never wake a sleeping baby to feed.

2. After 6 weeks or so, babies need to be sleep trained. Tending to a baby’s every peep during the night is only something a mom to few children and responsibilities can manage. It’s truly not necessary to stay up all night with your three month old baby. In fact, it’s not good for the baby.

3. A lot of babies don’t sleep well now because of “back to sleep,” which probably isn’t even necessary if you’re not poor, don’t smoke and don’t leave pillows in the crib. If there truly was a strong relationship between back sleeping and SIDS, then people would have figured this out before 1995.

4. A lot of men don’t contribute enough at home because men are lazy and will let women do all of the work. If you SAHM and don’t leave the house for extended periods of time, it’s not surprising you’re the default parent. You did this to yourself.

5. The food in NYC is not that great. NYC is overrated in general.

6. Parental leave is better in European countries because women have fewer options to stay home due to the higher COL and cultural norms like not sharing finances with a partner. Also, it’s cheaper for these governments to hand out a measly $200-300 a week and encourage women to stay home than pay for childcare with high labor costs. I’d be insulted to be expected to stay home for a year with each kid (BORING) for an annual salary of around $20k. I prefer my 12 weeks of unpaid leave and higher salary in the US.

7. Daycare is bad for babies. Babies need a primary caregiver and not to share one with 3-5 other babies.

8. Kids don’t need snacks. Ever. Truly unnecessary.

9. Having kids isn’t fun and it’s not supposed to be. It’s a form of work.

10. The more money a city spends on the homeless, the more homeless the city will have.

Agree with many, though definitely not all, of these.

Math is very different… a wise woman once said if you can’t read your considered stupid if you can’t do math your considered normal, neither is correct.

Most kids bad at math should just be labeled as “kids with teachers who cant teachers math”. Hence the need for a tutor.

No sorry. But very DCUM of you to blame am the teacher. A child can be slow at math, and not have a SN or a bad teacher. Some kids are just slower at math. That doesn’t make them bad people. But it’s not always something you can “fix.”

-Bike riders who ride on high-traffic roads without shoulders during rush hour are asking for it. Same with the ones who blow through stop signs at busy intersections. The laws of physics aren't on your side if/when you're on a bike and you collide with a car, so stop doing stupid shit on your bike.
-Anyone over 80 should not be allowed to have a driver's license. Medicare should pick up the tab on a sliding scale for Uber and Lyft to get older people to/from doctor's appointments and senior centers and the like, and subsidize the fee for other rides. It should also reimburse a portion of grocery or pharmacy delivery on a sliding scale. Sure, there are people 80+ who can drive just fine, but there are also people 14+ who can. There's a minimum age to legally start and there should be a maximum age to stop.
- If your kid can't swim, don't take them to the water park and turn them loose. Parents who do this should be charged with neglect. Practically every lifeguard who has worked at one of these places has an awful story involving a drowning or near drowning and in most cases it involves a kid who should never have been left alone in the lazy river.

Extra time on testing is BS. It's a way for people to try to game the system and the reality is their kids just can't cut it. The "learning disability" whether true or not is simply the explanation of why the kid can't cut it. There is no extra time in life, if you have a competitive job you need to produce on a deadline every day. The extra time on testing is just delaying the inevitable day of reckoning and trying to obfuscate the reality that will eventually become clear regardless.

The "DC food scene" is boring and uninspired, and a social construct created by the local BIDs to bring people to neighborhoods they wouldn't normally visit/that were on the brink of losing their residential and commercial property values.
