Grocery Shopping Rant

Anonymous
To the woman checking out at the Wegman's around 12:45pm today:

1) If you would like to have your groceries bagged in your own reusable bags, then give them to the cashier up front. Do not put them at the back of the conveyor belt behind your $200 worth of groceries and then ask the cashier to re-pack the things that are already in plastic bags.
2) Please remove your coupons from your coupon book and only give the cashier the coupons for items which you purchased. Do not expect the cashier to scan every coupon in the book and pull out the appropriate coupons for you.
3) If you want to purchase a gift card and do not see a design you like, then let the cashier know right away so that the manager can look for something appropriate while the cashier is ringing you up. Do not wait until after all your groceries are rung up and re-bagged, and after the cashier has scanned all your coupons. You wasted several minutes of my time and the cashier's time while we had to wait for the manager to come and then locate an acceptable card for you. Better yet, next time checkout first and then go and ask for help at the customer service counter.

Dear OP,
Have you heard of Peapod?

I agree with OP in that it is an annoyance (though not the end of the world). No one enjoys standing in the lines at the grocery (esp Wegmans, which are long). Get yourself together and get moving.

And, Wegmans does not have a "peapod" equivalent or I would consider it. I don't use peapod b/c I don't shop at Giant that much.

Good grief, they have wegman's in dc? Where do you people live?

I totally appreciate Wegman's. But I do NOT understand why some people HAVE to shop there then bitch about the inconvenience of it, as it is a commute and time consumption for most people (statistically impossible otherwise).

That said, OP, I have to side with you on this one. Typical. To that woman: "you are NOT the only one in the store, especially on a Friday!"

Thanks for the

The Wegmans' are in Fairfax and Dulles/Sterling. It is such a great grocery store that I occasionally drive from Arlington to shop there!

OP here. I went out of my way to go to Wegman's because Giant doesn't carry the item that I needed. What struck me most is that this woman just stood in there doing nothing while the cashier was ringing up her items. She did not attempt to page through the coupon book, in fact it was sitting on the conveyor belt with her bags. She did not look through the gift cards or peak at the other checkouts to see if they had a card that she liked.

It is not the end of the world, but I do think this woman was quite rude -- although she was totally unaware of the fact.

I had to laugh at this because I used to get so annoyed at other customers and wonder - who would be so inconsiderate of other people's time. And then I went grocery shopping with my husband. Yep, he's one of them. He doesn't open his wallet until the cashier rings up his total (I had to tell him he could swipe his darn card before the total shows up). And he is the one that parks his cart in the middle of the aisle as he ponders his surroundings. At times I get mad at his inability to notice his impact on others - and at times I envy him. He has much lower blood pressure and doesn't get stressed out as much.

But seriously, reusable bags at the END. Who would think that would work?

We all annoy others in different ways. Forgive me my trespasses as I forgive those who trespass against me. Sound familiar? OP, get a life -- hopefully one that embraces other human beings and their foibles, even if they're strangers. This woman wasted a few minutes of your time -- BFD.

Funny, if you go to other parts of the country that are quite nice, you won't run into this self-absorbed behavior. They would never tolerate it! But I can tell when someone is visiting from VA - they stare at you like you're the one holding everyone up. Funny!

It is rude to expect people to wait for you. The lady should have concluded her business briskly, then moved on.

We all share this planet and we don't have to march to your tune. Not checking out groceries exactly the way you do is fine. It is rude to expect everyone to get in line with your way of doing things. Take a breath.

Seriously? I can understand the advice that we should all be more patient with others but what about the poor cashier who had to repack all the groceries and scan every single coupon for this inconsiderate person who couldn't manage to plan ahead? I can't imagine having so little respect for others.
