Grocery Shopping Rant

Seriously! They should go back to institutionalizing people with lazy, hazy minds and schedules instead of letting them live out in society with the rest of us. i'm sure it costs us all about fifty cents a year just waiting behind someone like that at Wegman's. I for one would rather spend my fifty pennies on taxes to take people like that out of the mainstream and back into a setting where they can't hurt anyone's bank account with that kind of disorganized behavior. It's just plain crazy.

It also does no permanent harm to fellow shoppers in line if you loudly intone "boing, boing, boing" in a constantly repeating nasal drone, but doing so contravenes a societal norm. In DC and apparently also in its suburbs, the norm is changing pace of life- wise. Witness the number of PPs who agree shopping should be accomplished expediently. The region's traditional "southern efficiency" is slipping.

And just continue blocking out those who don't share your point of view about life in this area and how it "should" be lived. It's the mental and psychological equivalent of intoning "boing, boing, boing" in a constantly repeating nasal drone.

We all share this planet and we don't have to march to your tune. Not checking out groceries exactly the way you do is fine. It is rude to expect everyone to get in line with your way of doing things. Take a breath.

Seriously? I can understand the advice that we should all be more patient with others but what about the poor cashier who had to repack all the groceries and scan every single coupon for this inconsiderate person who couldn't manage to plan ahead? I can't imagine having so little respect for others.

That's their job.

Be nice. Not everyone is as smart or organized as you are on your best days. Why do you get pleasure out of imagining someone who doesn't open their coupon book or remember to ask for reusable bags is such a jerk?

Cashiers are judged and rate by the amount of groceries they checkout in an hour/day/week. So not only was the shopper rude, but she was adversely impacting the cashier's job performance -- which ultimately impacts his income.

"It's their job"?!?!?!?! You must have never worked retail. Just because they are a cashier doesn't mean that it's ok to treat them disrespectfully. I usually bag my own groceries (in my reusable bags) because...well, they are MY groceries. And, it takes less time, so it's more considerate to the cashier and the people behind me in line. And yes, I'm trying to herd my toddler and soothe my five month old while I do it. I'm not going to stand there like a bump on a log while I could be helping move the process along. I know that when I worked retail, those little kindnesses meant a whole lot.

I always end up behind this person, or the very elderly person with coupons who is writing a check. Even if I change lanes, I always end up behind the slowest customer. It's my Murphy's Law of grocery shopping. I don't know if anyone has said this yet, but I just pick up an Us Magazine and lose myself in the mindless celebrity smut so I won't notice or be annoyed by whatever is happening in line in front of me. You should try it!

That is probably why they go shopping in the middle of the day to avoid the very organized, focused people in a huge rush.

Agreed. I work in special education so every time I am behind someone like this, I just think they have poor executive functioning and they probably feel stupid enough without people huffing and puffing behind them. Not saying OP did this, but I have definitely shared a line with these people. The worst was when a woman was having difficulty using food stamps to buy formula - it was holding up the line and people were audibly complaining. *Cringe.*

Thank you. I remind myself that just because I'm in a hurry doesn't mean everyone else is or should be.

You bag your groceries because they are YOUR groceries? Please, that is a ridiculous grasp at being righteous. I always bag my own groceries too -- and watch my two kids -- because I enjoy it and that way I know where everything is when I get home. Sometimes, though, an employee does it for me and then I stand there like a bump on a log (which, if you ever have time to take a breath and a look around you while at the grocery store, almost everyone else is does, too).

This post made me laugh. We are from the UK where you would be lucky to have your groceries bagged for you. Whenever we go on vacation and I go grocery shopping, I am the lemon who stands there staring into space, until I remember, too late and I am sure much to the annoyance of everyone behind me, that bagging my groceries is actually my job. I always feel very stupid and scramble to pack and get out of there as quickly as possible.

We are so spoiled in America.
