No. Not til 8th grade.

6th grader has an iPhone (refurbished, not new). Not a new model but works just fine.

We'll do an older model iPhone or one of our old ones and upgrade us if the battery is good. It doesn't matter what phone you get, it matters what is on there and what they have access to. You don't have to put apps and the internet on there.

6th grader has an iphone. Has had it for probably two or three years. Can't remember which version - our kids end up with the hand me downs when parents get upgrades.

6th grader has an old school flip phone that he got at the beginning of the school year. He just uses it to call or text if there's an emergency, particularly since he walks home from school a few hours before I get home from work.

And let me just add that most of the time the phone sits in a basket under a load of basketball gear and school books, neglected and forgotten. The iPad, which my kid needs for school, is the time suck - once he realized he could text from the iPad the phone lost all power and he doesn't carry it anywhere.

He got it in the summer after 5th when he was coming home from camp alone each day.

7th grader has an iPhone 8 Plus (he got this upgrade once my husband upgraded his phone)
5th grader got an iPhone 7 (I think that’s it) and it was refurbished.

6th grader has iPhone 5, 7th grader has iPhone 7 -- both are old phones they got when my husband and I upgraded.

old flip phone 6th. it was used just as a contact. He couldn't do anything else with it.

At 13/7th grade, he got an older model iPhone. He doesn't have it at night, stays downstairs. And, within a month, we didn't like the amount of time he was spending on it (playing video games mostly) so had to set limits. No social media accounts. He does text friends to set up get togethers/meet ups to play soccer, basketball, etc.
