Why is Alsobrooks so popular?

Anonymous
There is already talk of her running for governor in 2022. I'm somewhat new to the area, and while I don't have a problem with her, I am wondering why she has become such a darling of the DC area Maryland Democrats. What has she done, specifically? How are people so sure she'll do such a great job as PG CE that she's already in discussions about the governorship? Because she's young, attractive, and black?

I never saw her personally handle a case that wasnt a rock-solid, 100% slam-dunk prosecution when she was either assistant states attorney or states attorney.

She totally avoided cases that had the slightest chance of an embarassing failure. And the few aquitals I witnessed on cases she was assocaited with did, she did not handle it well with the media.

She's an empty vessel. But she's perfect for running PG, because she has the right look, and that's all that matters there. She'll get the same precincts that Jealous won last month.

That's kind of racist OP, to assume someone is popular just because they are black. Maybe PG which is vast majority African-American elects African-American officials because stastically that is the probability based on the electoral pool?

Maryland does not nominate candidates based on Affirmative Action.

I think this is unfair to OP.

Go and look at the various threads concerning the MD governor's election. There were several posters who said that anyone not voting for Ben Jealous were racist. Their entire point was that it was incumbent upon the MD electorate to vote for the first black governor of the state over all other reasons. If there are people who were only voting for Ben Jealous because he was black and not based on his merit as a candidate or his political party, why wouldn't there be those (maybe the same ones) who would vote for Alsobrooks because she is black. And a woman to boot, so the first black governor and the first female governor of the state in one package.

It's not affirmative action, but it is voting for the candidate to get the first governor of two minorities with one win.

Actually I do think OP is right. Alsobrooks is already being promoted, regardless of merit, by the Democratic establishment because she is attractive and black and a woman. If you think Maryland Democrats will outgrow Identity Politics then you are deluding yourselves.

In their minds,
Democrats = young, hip, minority, speak for black people (whether they want it or not), anyone but fat old white men
Republicans = fat old white men

How do you explain Marc Elrich?

How do you explain Marc Elrich?

Bernie Sanders
Steny Hoyer
Ben Cardin
Martin O'Malley
Tim Kaine
Ralph Northam
Paul Sarbanes
Dutch Ruppersberger
John Delaney
Mark Warner
Jim Webb
Chuck Robb

And that's just in the local DC area. In the 2014 elections, 93% of the Democratic candidates were older white men. In 2018, they were down to about 68% but that's still over 2/3 of the candidates seeking political office.

PP here and that's my point. Democrats are trying to make it look like they are not the party of old white men by catering to identity politics with their token black or female or minority candidates - even though they ARE the party of old white men, at LEAST as much as Republicans.

I would say that nonwhite Republicans are more genuine, because they arrived at their political beliefs not because they were told what to think, as Democrats do. Democrats think they have the monopoly on the black vote and don't have to earn their vote. Republicans are less inclined to have the "soft bigotry of low expecations" and believe that black people and other minorities can be self made men and women just like white people can.

Marc Elrich is a privileged old white man that thinks he knows best for minorities and tells them they need to keep relying on the government.

No, she not.

She just looks the part.

Yes.

As much as I don’t like when woman politicians are judged negatively for their looks, it also isn’t helpful when the reverse is true. Angela Alsobrooks would not have gotten where she is in PG County if she were not, as OP said, attractive and black.
Same with Maya Rockeymoore Cummings. Why on earth is she qualified? She’s Elijah’s trophy wife?
And same goes for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She’s young and cute, so the media won’t shut up about her. If she were ugly, she’d just be a socialist loudmouth and would be (rightfully) ignored.

I don’t see what is wrong if she does “look the part.” She was the moderate candidate (compared to Edwards) and she won. Give her a chance and she can do a good job.
Hate to tell you but being good looking does help you in politics. It’s good to be well put together and show that you have your life in order - which is more than I can say for Marc Elrich and his five chins.

She’s an intellectual lightweight. She avoided any cases that weren’t 100% slam-dunk guarantees of a guilty verdict. She’s weak sauce.
