In their minds, Democrats = young, hip, minority, speak for black people (whether they want it or not), anyone but fat old white men Republicans = fat old white men
How do you explain Marc Elrich?
Bernie Sanders Steny Hoyer Ben Cardin Martin O'Malley Tim Kaine Ralph Northam Paul Sarbanes Dutch Ruppersberger John Delaney Mark Warner Jim Webb Chuck Robb And that's just in the local DC area. In the 2014 elections, 93% of the Democratic candidates were older white men. In 2018, they were down to about 68% but that's still over 2/3 of the candidates seeking political office.
PP here and that's my point. Democrats are trying to make it look like they are not the party of old white men by catering to identity politics with their token black or female or minority candidates - even though they ARE the party of old white men, at LEAST as much as Republicans. I would say that nonwhite Republicans are more genuine, because they arrived at their political beliefs not because they were told what to think, as Democrats do. Democrats think they have the monopoly on the black vote and don't have to earn their vote. Republicans are less inclined to have the "soft bigotry of low expecations" and believe that black people and other minorities can be self made men and women just like white people can. Marc Elrich is a privileged old white man that thinks he knows best for minorities and tells them they need to keep relying on the government.
