which middle schools allow accelerated math?

Anonymous
As far as I can tell from websites like Deal's, they allow for Algebra I in 8th grade. How does this selection work? based on PARCC scores or other criteria? and some threads on here imply that some schools may allow algebra I in 7th. Thanks for any intel!

If you look at the detailed PARCC scores you should be able to figure out if 7th graders are participating. But if they aren't, that does not mean they coulnd't in a future year.

I doubt it is PARCC based bc what about new kids from a state that does not use PARCC? Probably recommendation-based, but I imagine it varies by schoop.

Deal has a few math tracks:

6th grade: 6th grade math or 7th grade math
Placement is done a few weeks into the school year and is based on iReady scores + teacher observation

7th grade: 7th grade math, 8th grade math, algebra 1, or algebra 1 + geometry
Some kids have the chance to accelerate over the summer, allowing them to “skip” a year and go from 6th grade math to 8th grade math or 7th grade math to algebra 1 (or algebra 1 + geometry, for a very few kids). There’s also an algebra 1 placement test at the beginning of the year for kids who didn’t accelerate over the summer but think they’re ready.

8th grade: 8th grade math, algebra 1, geometry, or algebra 2
Not sure if summer acceleration is possible here. Presumably placement is based largely on 7th grade track.

OP - are you only interested in DCPS?

Every DCPS middle school offers algebra in 8th grade. Some of the middle schools offer it even earlier (such as 7th grade) and geometry in 8th. Deal even has some Algebra II students but that is the exception, not the rule.

despite PARCC scores on math, Stuart Hobson is offering 7th grade math to 6th graders this year. It's the 1st cohort advanced enough to offer as a full section to all qualifying 6th graders and they're tracked for 8th grade geometry as a regular course (instead of elective as currently offered). Teacher is very good and the course is rigorous.

Where/how does summer math acceleration for 7th grade Algebra I happen? Summer school? Private tutor?

Last year it was summer school by invitation only (based on iReady scores) because they can only offer it to a finite number of students (because of class size limitations. I have heard that the school might not have it this summer as it's dependent on them receiving special funding to pay the teacher.
If it's not offered, the same cohort of kids will be able to study independently.

There is the option to accelerate over the summer before 7th and 8th if the kid is qualified. Also the option to double up on Geometry and Algebra in one year - no PE/art/music though.

OP here--thanks. Seems tough for kids to some how accelerate over the summer based on self-study.

To the PP, I didn't consider charters since you can't guarantee you'll get into them, I was thinking DCPS. We are also looking at close in MD or VA but that's a whole other set of questions.

Thanks for the responses!

Too bad Jefferson doesn’t have the Math and Science program anymore. That was many years ago, but the program had algebra in 7th grade. A company adopted the school and added to the science.

If your child is ready for it and invited to try to accelerate, it is not that hard so long as you try to spread it out over the summer. They do the 8th grade math section of Khan Academy (this is if they took Math 7 in 6th and got an A and want to). If they pass the test (my child got through about 60-70% of the Khan Academy materials and received a 90% on the test) they do Alegebra I in 7th. I believe whether they can do Algebra I and Geometry together is a function of their I-Ready scores. I also know of a child that took math 7 and 8 in 6th grade so went straight into Algebra I in 7th.

if your child is off-the-charts in math they will accelerate further based on iReady testing (i.e. your kid has to prove it on a test they administer and it's not based on parental input).
There's one kid in Algebra 1 in 6th grade this year.

We're in-bounds for SH with children in upper grades at Hill DCPS, good news. Thanks for sharing, PP.
