Clarifying - not for everyone. And irrelevant since OP doesn't want a charter.

To the PP, I didn't consider charters since you can't guarantee you'll get into them, I was thinking DCPS. We are also looking at close in MD or VA but that's a whole other set of questions.

Thanks for the responses!

The self study is to catch any pre-Algebra topics a child hasn't mastered. If your child has already covered pre-Algebra, it is better to self-study than take the class. My DC did self-study and it took a few hours to make sure no topics had been skipped in earlier mastery.

I have little patience for nostalgia when it comes to DC schools. To set the record straight about what's going on today: Jefferson does offer and advanced math path through middle school. Depending on the number of students coming in qualifying, it's a combo of self-contained advanced tracks or joining the higher grade-level, then finishing out 8th in a self-contained program. No complaints about the science curriculum either. Yes, there is always more that could be done in science but what I'm seeing there is rigorous with enough hands-on applications built in.

Yes, to two or three kids a year. There are other ways for 5th graders to learn algebra.

Correction - they will advance as many kids as are ready for it. They track for math from 5-12
