| DS 14 had a rapid growth in height over the summer and gain 2+ inches in two months, then gained maybe just a 1/4 in the last two months. Was wondering if that's the growth spurt that often takes place during puberty, or is there usually more than one such rapid growth. His voice has changed and mustache above upper lip, and a bit of 'Adams apple' and more visible muscles (without any weight training). Don't know about pubic hair etc though. |
| he is probably not done, and 2 inches is nothing. |
| I red it it's 3 to 9 inches so 2+ is not far off |
| Several spurts. It's common to have rapid growth, followed by a slowdown and then more rapid growth. Kids don't usually grow at a consistent rate in puberty. |
|
When my kid's voice changed/adams apple apeared%facial hair thickened after a big growth spurt, his subsequent growth spurts were less and slower.
However, his big growth spurt was 6 to 8 inches in about as many months. His school picture between beginning of freshmen year to what he looked like by Christmas of sophomore year is so different that if you had not seen the transition you would not have recognized him. |
Ha! I recently stumbled on a pic from the beginning of ninth, and the kid looked nine. By the end of high school he'd grown 8 inches and there is no sign he is done yet. |
| DS is in 9th grade and looks nine. Hoping it comes. DD is 5'8" -- at 17 so she is done but my son is tiny. 5'3" and about 105lbs. No growth spurts at all, no hair, no voice change - he could be in 6th grade... |
My DS was the same size early in 9th grade, 5'3" and 105 lbs. He looked like the bus dropped him off at the wrong school! But he grew 4" the past year and is 5'7" and 130 lbs now in 10th grade. No longer *the* shortest kid, even among the girls. It'll come! |
| I think it's really all over the map. 16 YO DC had a growth spurt that seemed to last from late 7th grade through early 9th grade (5' 6" through 6'2"), then thought he was done, then started growing more slowly again in 10th and has continued (6'2" - 6'4") for a year. He's been lifting weights but has not added muscle despite developing body hair and shaving. I'm a guy and I was definitely able to add muscle more easily at his age. I'm hoping it comes because he's discouraged about not being stronger. |
I have an 8th grade DS who weighs around 80lbs (soaking wet) and is 4 feet 11 inches tall. I HOPE he is that tall by next year! |
OT but when can boys start lifting weights? |
Generally, at the onset of puberty. They need the testosterone to put on muscle mass. However, you have to be careful, especially during growth spurts, to lift correctly and avoid injury in kids whose ligaments and tendons are lengthening. |
| My 14 yr old is 5’9” and 160 lbs. he has grown two clothing sizes since September and 3 1/2 shoe sizes since the middle of October ( currently wears a size 11 men’s ). So, he is currently in a wild growth spurt. Most of his other grow spurts have also been large, but not like this. Oh, And he isn’t anywhere near done yet. |
| is it basically tall people had more spurts short people had less? |
There's so many variables...genetics are the primary driver of final adult height*. Height at the start of puberty can play into it, when you started puberty, how long puberty lasts, even how long a kid is in each stage of puberty. *nutrition is the second driver, but that's something that rarely is a concern in the U.S. |
