Puberty Growth spurt - one or many?

Was wondering if that's the growth spurt that often takes place during puberty, or is there usually more than one such rapid growth. His voice has changed and mustache above upper lip, and a bit of 'Adams apple' and more visible muscles (without any weight training). Don't know about pubic hair etc though.

He's 14. Nowhere near done.

son hit puberty age 12 or so. seemed like he grew about 7 inches between 12 and 14. he's now 15 (voice is low, has adam's apple, has to shave a couple of times a week, but does not have big chest muscles, has not filled out). his size 13 feet have been that way for the last year and we haven't had to size up in shoes. he's grown less than 2 inches in the last year. we're starting to wonder if he may actually have reached his full height (he hopes not). he's hoping he has another small growth spurt in him because he'd like to be an inch or two taller. we'll see.

Same here. Son started puberty at 12 and grew 8 inches in 2 years, now 5’8, deep voice, Adam’s apple and filled out. He really wants to keep growing but I’m not sure if he will - guess time will tell.

Peak height velocity is usually 2 or 2 1/2 years after the start of puberty. They still grow after the peak height growth, but at a slower rate.

Damn. There are so many boys hitting growth spurt at 13. My 13-year old has
started. Hair in places, no voice change, no growth spurt, still “kid” interests.

My son is the same. He looks like a little kid compared to the other boys but he has short parents and isn't going to be that tall. His voice is changing and does have underarm hair now. He has grown steadily for the last two years but no big spurt yet.

There's so many variables...genetics are the primary driver of final adult height*. Height at the start of puberty can play into it, when you started puberty, how long puberty lasts, even how long a kid is in each stage of puberty.

*nutrition is the second driver, but that's something that rarely is a concern in the U.S.

I’ve always heard kids that start puberty early dintvreach full growth potential. Kids that start later/average grow more—with genetics taken into account.

Bumping this. DS is 12 1/2. At his annual physical, his dr said that he was in the early stages of puberty and he had much more growing to do. Since then, his voice has dropped, he’s grown 3 inches and he’s developing a little milk mustache and he has a few chin hairs he’s shaved with an electric trimmer. A few days ago I walked in his room while he was changing accidentally and he definitely has a lot happening down there.

Seems like the rate of puberty for him has really sped up these past 6 months. Does this warrant a drs appointment or is this just typical? Definitely noticing his friends going thru little changes but his seem so quick. FYI, he’s 5ft5 right now and both DH and I are quite short (DH is 5’6.) DS has always been in the 75th% for height and weight.

DS is 15. He had major puberty changes around age 13. In the last 2 years he has grown 4 inches. Ped said he is done with puberty (in that there are no more hormonal changes happening). However, he said that DS still had skeletal growth happening (growth played not closed yet).

How do you know? Did he have an x ray for some reason?

Curious about this as well

This, folks, is the correct answer.

Yes, growth can come in straight-line spurts, or start/stop/start again, everyone is so individual, even siblings' growth can be very different from one another. A pediatric endrocrinologist can't even tell you exactly how/when your child will grow (just essentially if they will continue to grow, based on an x-ray of growth plates).

My experience in watching my son's friends is that the boys with short dads grow early and hit puberty quickly and early (12ish). Then the rapid growth/changes slow as quickly as they started.

Granted there are exceptions to this but I've noticed a definite trend.

Opposite situation here PP. My DH is 5ft 4in like me. Our son has always been very little and is definitely the last of his friends to hit puberty. He is still small and lightweight compared to the other boys although I am happy with where he is now (our exact height and maybe 100lbs). He is still growing so that's good news for his future height.

Thanks/ this is def our case here. Hoping he’ll make it to 5’8 or more. It’s just weird that he’s always been on the tall side. My dad is very tall so we are hopeful. Our other son is small and I expect he’ll stay that way.
