Why would Dems want to do this? Just so you could feel better? This is the govt the people voted for: narcissistic bomb throwers how want to cut social security and run sham hearings. Like their policies or not, Dems are there to govern. They should sit back and let GOP figure this out which could include 6 Team Normal Rs to cross the aisle and offer Dems a potential Speaker who would act in good faith. Dems have already said they are open to this. |
A handful or Rs could vote Jeffries if that is how they want to fix their parties mess. Could a block of them just vote present to effectively hand Jeffries victory? At any rate, not Dems problem to fix. Actions have consequences for GOP (at least sometimes I hope). |
Or a handful of moderate (or pragmatic) Republicans could offer Democrats to run someone like Fred Upton in exchange for their vote. |
I agree someone more moderate would be a better pick. At some point, I think the Dems will have to be the only adult in the room to move things forward. I’d like the freedumb caucus to stay off committees. |
| The was no Red Wave. Yet their leaders seem to be winning at the negotiations. |
Moderate R's should start voting Jeffries to put the wackos in their place. Give 'em a scare. |
The minority party serves a valuable function and is capable of putting the brakes on some majority issues. However, it's not the function of the minority party to choose the Speaker. That's the job of the majority party. |
There are no moderate Rs. There are wackjobs who think they can use debt ceiling and government shutdown threats to enact their dreams of cutting the federal budget by 90%, getting rid of the progressive income tax, getting rid of SS/Medicare/Medicaid/ACA, stopping all immigration, etc. and then there are wackjobs would really like to do those things but realize it's not actually possible with just a House majority. |
| We're only on the third day of this, but I'd like to point out that this will get worse for the Rs if they drag this into February. The VA special election is set for Feb and will likely result in one more D member. And Santos is likely to get indicted or extradited, resulting in one less R member (and McCarthy vote). |
| Kevin will give them even more. Not sure what else he can give up. But all he wants is the title. What a spineless, egocentric twit he is. Just 725 days to go… |
| Moderate republicans in purple districts were swept out thanks to Trump. The moderate Rs in red districts have been primaried out |
| My prediction is that today, either McCarthy withdraws or a bloc of his voters starts voting for Scalise and urges others to follow. |
There is no reason for Democrats to help elect any Republican Speaker because that wouldn’t change the fact that Republicans have a 222-212 majority that could approve or disapprove House rules, committee assignments, procedural votes, and the House agenda. The Speaker only has as much power as he/she has the votes to enforce. |
Are you drunk or just stupid? The Dems will stick with Jeffries. |
