Private & Independent Schools
|
Anytime anyone writes anything other than something about Beauvoir -- you get some nasty reply saying something hideous like a recent "methinks there is a __ booster on this post". Who uses the word "methinks" or than some pretentious Beauvoir parent who thinks they are better than everyone else cause their kid got in. We know & we have all heard you bragging ad infinitum about it ... enough already! Give some other people/schools a chance.
I know some proud Beauvoir parent is going to say "sour grapes" (another common Beauvoir reply). No, my kid was too old to apply there when we moved to DC from San Fran. And, by the way, DC is not the ONLY town in the country that has private schools. There are better ones outside of DC folks -- sorry to have to break it to you. |
| I see it the other way. It seems to me that most of the peole weighing in on the school are not parents there, so it seems to be all hearsay, and mostly negative. |
| Agree with PP. Its clear that many people on this board are not at all taken by Beauvoir. Its also easier to get a child in as there are many many more spots at PreK and still substantially greater number of spots at K. The numbers indicate that it can't be as exclusive as the other top schools. Having said that there are big contingents from Little Folks and NCRC who go there - so its obviously much harder for children from other schools. I think for many families at those schools with bright kids who test well and do the playdate easily, Beauvoir becomes the necessary evil if they want an independent school. If you have your heart set on one of the other top schools, good luck after all! |

I don't understand the hostility to Beauvoir in this post. There has been much less talk of Beauvoir now than in previous years, and a number of other schools have been the subject of generally constructive discussion. The "methinks" post was in response to the constant bumping of multiple threads involving Holton, which is annoying when the bumper has nothing to add. Are you the bumper? If you'd like to hear more about a school, at least ask a new question.
(Really, there are other private schools? Who knew?) |
That may be so, but most of us are not sending our children to other cities for elementary school so I think a focus on DC based schools is not so parochial. |
| If you do not want folks talking about Beauvoir then why did YOU start another post about it? |
| I don't think this is true at all. I don't perceive an overabundance of Beauvoir posts on this board - certainly not any more than the other top tier schools like Sidwell, Potomac, Maret, GDS, STA or NCS. |
Methinks the lady doth protest too much! |

I do not think it is *MOST* of the people on DCUM. Sadly, it is my view that there are a few people, probably very few, who are are just plain nasty and unkind. And these nasty and unkind people surface in every thread on DCUM with no purpose other than to insult and cause drama.
And I think it would be great if everyone just ignored these people. |
I am not the poster who is quoted. But had to respond because this is exactly our impression. We've just started the process now at NCRC, and know a few families who have said that Beauvoir ended up being their only choice but it wasn't one they were overly thrilled about. One family really wanted Sidwell (almost impossible), one was into Maret (tiny class, too many siblings in some years). |
| It looks like the point of this thread is to trash Beauvoir. I don't have a kid there, or in any Cathedral school. But this sort of fishing alienates me from OP, not from the school. |
It is funny I have never heard a Beauvoir parent brag about Beauvoir except to say they loved their school (but who doesn't love their school?) and happy with their decision. Most people seem to love their school and that is great. The bragging about the school came from non-Beauvoir parents and from friends who were going to apply there as well the same year as we were. In fact it was other non-Beauvoir people that sold me on touring the school. They all told me how impossible it was to get in and etc... Now that I am at the school - I have never heard any Beauvoir parent brag about the school or about how difficult it is to get in. Many parents at Beauvoir have friends and neighbors with children at other wonderful schools so they are aware that there are other wonderful schools as well. It appears that 90% of the threads on here are from non-Beauvoir parents inquiring about the school. I am sorry that you have this impression of the school and of the families there - I have not found this to be true at all. |
Huh???? Anybody who accuses another poster of boosterism MUST be a Beauvoir parent? How the heck do you know that? I can't decide which is sillier -- your second sentence saying that Beauvoir parents pounce on any post that says nice things about a school other than Beauvoir (and you know this is Beauvoir and not Sidwell parents -- tell us how again?). Or your third sentence saying that Beauvoir parents are identifiable because they use the "methinks"? I'm not a Beauvoir parent, or a Cathedral parent, but this is beyond ridiculous. So you must be a troll. |

There is a lot of interest in Beauvoir because it is a top notch school devoted to early childhood education and there are more than twice the number of openings than at most schools including Sidwell and GDS. Naturally, by size alone there are more parents (including myself) of current young students out there and because the school has a large Pre-K class, that generates interest as well. If the school's pre-k class was limited to 20-25 students you wouldn't hear as much about it. I realize that schools that go all the way through 12th grade expand later on, but there probably is more attention paid toward Pre K/K admissions on this board, because choosing where to enroll your child in real school for the first time is a huge step which has little input from the child, and I imagine in later years, it is the student who is making the choice more than the parent. Also, students just starting out haven't built their academic resume's yet which is a huge difference maker in the later years.
As for boosters, I think it's wonderful the way so many parents on this board love where their children are enrolled be it Beauvoir or any school for that matter. What I have been personally been impressed by with the school (which interestingly I didn't get any impression of while going through the application process) is that it is truly exciting to be a part of school whose sole focus is early education and devotes the depth and resources to furthering this study. It feels like a mini-university in a good way - the teachers read at least one book on early education each week. The school is filled with love and the enthusiasm for learning is contagious. One final comment which is purely objective. I was surprised that in my DC's Pre-K class of 20, at least 6 of the children were from NCRC and 3/4 kids from Little Folks. (Full disclosure my child did not attend either). |
| I got curious and searched the forums for the word "methinks." Pretty funny results. If it's only one person using the word, she's a mom with children at GDS, Sdwell, and Beauvoir. She knows her way around a bong, enjoys playgroups that drink, and thinks Bobby Jindal looks like Kenneth the Page (which is totally hilarious because it's true). I think I want to be her. |
