Why do people on DCUM think Beauvoir is the only school worthy of discussion on these posts?

It is not so much that Beauvoir is the only school "worthy" of discussion. There are many, I dare say the overwhelming majority, of schools that are "worthy" of discussion if the topic is an honest and sincere sharing of information about the merits of a particular school.

No, what explains the Beauvoir obsession is "our" (the DCUM community writ large) obsession with the WASP Establishment, which very few of us actually belong to, and most of us would profess to publicly deride if not outright despise. It speaks to "our" insecurities and almost innate drive to social climb, the latter quality which is actually quite uniquely an American trait . . .

Beauvoir doesn't haven as many openings as other schools like St. Pats, NPS, and GDS. Also there really are not many openings at Beauvoir, as most spots are for siblings, alumae children, and teachers' children. Only a few spots open and with the numerous number of applicants at the school the percentage of acceptances is super low. But who cares anyway if you don't like the school then don't apply! I see discussion of several schools on these boards which I found helpful when going through the application process. I agree with a pp about Beauvoir being the "best" school for certain social circles. I have many friends in these circles and this is true - Beauvoir was their first choice. None of them even looked at Sidwell or GDS which are considered top schools as well, which I never understood.

What I don't understand is why people are taking this thread seriously. I don't have a kid at Beauvoir, either, but I do get exasperated with some of the behavior at DCUM.

Why would anybody take at face value an OP who claims that:
(1) people who accuse others of boosterism *must* be Beauvoir supporters jealous of the attention given to other schools, and
(2) anonymous posts that contain the word "methinks" *must* similarly be from Beauvoir parents.

Just curious about Pre-K intake. Beauvoir takes 60 pre-K students. What other DC area private school takes more than 60 pre-k students?

When I toured St. Patrick's last year, the DA said the school added 38 pre-k students to their nursery school 3 year old class. How many Pre-K students does GDS enroll?? I was under the impression (perhaps falsely) that Beauvoir's enrollment of 60 new students for pre-K alone was the largest new student enrollment private in the area. BTW. I am referencing numbers alone with no consideration because it could easily be assumed that all schools have the sibling/legacy/teacher situation - so it's an apples for apples comparison by class size alone.

Beauvoir does take 80 students (4 sections) in PreK and 20 in K (almost all new students as sib preference is for PreK). All schools give preference to siblings, alums, teachers. But after all that is accounted for, Beauvoir will take approximately 50-60 new students in PreK. You can contrast this with about 5-10 at GDS, and decide which is harder to get into. Sidwell and Maret are similar to GDS. My DC is at Beauvoir, and didn't make it into the others.

Beauvoir admits 3 sections in PK, not 4. Odd that a parent with a DC at the school would not know that.

Beauvoir takes in 60 kids at pre-k and if you use historical averages for the past 4-5 years (varies widely year to year), about half the entering pre-k kids are sibs. Probably more if you add in legacies. Fewer sibs, but still almost 25%, enter at K.

And not all schools have a strong sib policy.

I am the PP who asked about Pre-K classes at DC privates. Just because Beauvoir takes more Pre-K students does not make it easier to get into than GDS or any school for that matter. Not to take anything away from any other school, the truth is Beauvoir's longstanding outstanding reputation and large entry class generates a great deal of interest, in many cases more than schools with smaller classes during the very early years. As many are quick to point out, it is not the right school for every child. I think we agree that no school is one size fits all. That being said and as a current Beauvoir parent and alum, from my own personal experience most families who are part of the community are devoted to the school. On a positive note, this could be said about many schools in the DC metro area.

Please name one school that does not have a strong sib policy.

Just met with the AD at Beauvoir recently during group tour. She said Beauvoir takes 63 Pre-k and 21 K students each year. Parents were advised, Pre-k offers the best chance to get kids into school.

Maret.

The sibling policy in Maret is not strong because its a very tiny school. Usually siblings will get in, they just may not get in when you want them to. Sidwell is not great either. GDS is stronger and siblings will get in unless there is a clear issue with the child. At all of these, you may be asked to wait a year or so to make way for large numbers of connected applicants. Beauvoir assures siblings entrance, again, unless there is a clear issue.

Uniquely American?

Suggested reading list: Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," Flaubert's "Madame Bovary," Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina"...
