It seems like we should start keeping a master list of incidents happening at MCPS, namely rapes, hazing, and gun activity (including incidents of bringing guns to school). At a minimum, we should have the date, name of school, incident description. The database could include more details like outcomes, resolutions. This would be a database of reported incidents whether from MCPS and/or the media.
We could do this with a Google spreadsheet and perhaps issue a report every year. This seems like a good project for the PTA. Let's get a better handle on the scope and frequency of these incidents. What do you all think? What are your ideas? |
Are you in the PTA and willing to do this task? Carry on! BTW - MCCPTA does have a very involved committee for school safety and climate. Maybe you should ask to be included in it. |
| The problem is that so many things are handled quietly. Even if we know of something (I do), we do not want to out our high school. There are SO MANY incidents, you would want to home school. |
MCPS has the list, get it from them. |
| To what end? We hear from the Parents Coalition and others all the time about MCPS sweeping these incidents under the rug. Now, they tell us about everything, and you are all STILL unhappy. |
That’s funny. You really think MCPS tells you about everything? You must be incredibly gullible. Most incidents get swept under the rug. This rape would have also, but luckily the story got picked up by the media. |
| I don’t even think each HS reports all of the issues to the head office. What OP is asking would scare the crap out of parents, and would be hard to uncover. Do you really want to see the underbelly? |
| I don't understand what the purpose of this list would be. Are you saying that Montgomery County has more issues than other counties or other states? Because that isn't the case. |
| I guess if you need a hobby. |
How would you know? You don't want to see a list, but immediately say MCPS isn't worse than other districts. If you have the data (Derek) then release it. |
What? How can you make that assertion when you don’t have stats for MCPS. My sister teaches in another large school district and she is pretty horrified by the stories that come out of MCPS. Let alone the stuff that MCPS tried to sweep under the rug. |
DP. How can you make the assertion that it IS worse? Your sister is anecdote, not data. |
Does your sister teach in Baltimore county, because teachers get socked in their piehole there!! |
The problem is that parents are raising their children to think doing these things is acceptable. School is where these kids are for most of their day, so that's where the incidents take place. You're fooling yourself if you think these incidents don't take place outside of school. The glaring issue is not with the schools. The schools are the easy scapegoat in all of this and a way for parents to point fingers at others when they're the ones who have failed their children. The glaring issue is that children are not being raised by their parents to understand how serious these offenses are, and how morally and ethically wrong they are. |
Thank you for saying this. This is exactly how I feel as well. Piss poor parenting and taking no responsibility for it and only wondering how to get their child out of facing any consequences so it doesn't affect their college chances. Sick priorities. |
