I am looking for recommendations for movies for kids (7 and 8yrs) that are 'real' but still age appropriate. I didn't grow up in the US so my repertoire is very slim. They recently watched the Parent Trap and loved it. I think Sound of Music is still too advanced for them. They love Home Alone. But that's literally all I know.
ANy other movies of the same genre? |
Have they seen Annie? |
Seven and eight is not too young for Sound of Music. The theatres were full of kids that age when it first came out!

Mary Poppins. Free Willy. Although I hear you OP, my kid, who mostly likes cartoons, loves Parent Trap.
You can also see what is recommended by age on Common Sense Media... https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-lists |
Goonies |
Look Who's Talking 1,2 &3. Kids 8 and 11 loved it. Age appropriate if you are ok explaining sperm and egg as there are brief scenes |
7 and 8 is perfect for The Sound of Music.
Also: Singing in the Rain (spectacular time tested musical) Enchanted (hilarious take on Disney Princess movies) Pollyanna |
The Sandlot, A dog's purpose, the shaggy DA, Homeward Bound, for my kids, anything with dogs in it! |
Yes, Sandlot! |
I've recommended this book before: "The Best Old Movies for Families" by Ty Burr. I love how he organizes it by age and gives lots of information about each movie. We've enjoyed pretty much every movie we've watched from it, and all of us (kids and parents) are getting a education in (mostly American) movies! |
That’s a great age for sound of music. Particularly the first half.
Pipi longstocking is ok if you can get past the language dubbing, but I have a soft spot from my childhood for that movie. Have they watched both versions of the parent trap? The original Charlie and the chocolate factory Ms. Doubtfire |
Swiss Family Robinson |
We just watched Back to the Future with our 7 yo and it's all he has talked about for weeks. Also love The Sandlot. The Little Rascals (90s version, I think) is one of my all-time favorites for kids. |
How about other Haley Mills and similar films from that era? |
We recently watched A Dog’s Purpose, and my 7 year old and 13 year old loved it, as did I.
We also like Akeelah and the Bee. It might be just a little too early yet, but I also recommend October Sky. They might appreciate it more in a couple of years, but it’s so, so good. |
