| I typically just keep these items in their original packaging. However, I see that many people use canisters, I think for freshness or convenience. What is the best way to store this stuff? In the canisters? If so, should I stay away from plastic and use glass? This is a serious question, I don't know whether to convert my pantry to have modular storage for these items. Thanks for any advice, I have always wanted to do this in part so I cook with fresher ingredients.! |
| I use canisters for all except for pasta because I buy in bulk. I bring reusable drawstring bags to the store to fill them and then bring them home and dump into a glass canister. I try to use as little plastic as possible. |
| Flour should be stored in the refrigerator. |
Or freezer if it is not baking season. |
| I use glass jars. It looks nice and they are cheap |
I also prefer glass. I do have 15 bpa free pantry containers we got as a wedding gift. They vacuum seal. I think they are OXO. Perfect for cold cereals, nuts, pasta, and rice. |
| I use glass jars from ikea or container store. Some are just bell canning jars. That way I can see what I have and how much. |
| I used to just store flour in their bags but I started baking more and scooping it out became inconvenient. So I recently got a couple of air-tight large plastic bins for the flour. I didn't think of using glass. I wanted containers that could hold an entire bag of flour. Working well so far. |

I prefer glass too, but it was heavy and didn't seal easily for full bags of flour. Have some of these:

I use the Rubbermaid version of these for flour and sugar. I think I bought them at the container store when we lived close to one. An 8 qt container holds ten pounds of flour or sugar. I don’t refrigerate regular flour, but I also live in a much drier climate than the DC area and go through it pretty quickly. |

Ikea containers. Comes in two sizes.

I have some glass canisters from OXO that I use to store flour and sugar. I just store beans, pasta and rice in the bag/box they come in. I keep rubber bands and twist ties in my junk drawer to seal them up.
Also, you're supposed to store flour in the fridge? I didn't know that. Mine is in the pantry closet. |
Yes. You store flour in the refrigerator. It extends the life span to I believe 2 years, and it also keeps weevils from growing in the flour. |
You take two years to use up a bag of flour? I guess you don't bake a lot. I bake every so often and use at least 2-3 bags a year. Plus I use both all purpose and whole wheat so storing both in the fridge would take a lot of space. |
Oh, lol. Of course not. I go through a bag of flour every few months. A bag of my semolina flour does last a long time though. |
