Is Prince William jealous of Harry and Meghan's popularity?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are Wildly Popular. That Could Be a Problem

Prince William is said to be very aware of his status as the future king, while his wife doesn't want to overshadow him. How will they cope with Harry and Meghan’s soaring profile?

By Tom Sykes

The crowds turning out in Australia to greet Meghan and Harry this week, where the couple are on a 16-day tour, are unprecedented.

Crowds of that size have not appeared for Queen Elizabeth on any of her trips to Australia (which date back as far as the 1950s), and Harry and “Megmania” easily eclipses the enthusiasm with which William and Kate’s 2104 trip to Australia—even with crowd-pulling Prince George in tow—were received…. Meghan and Harry could easily steal William and Kate’s thunder. And that really wouldn’t be wise at all.

William is said by some who know him to share one of his father’s less admirable traits—jealousy. Sources have told The Daily Beast that fear of provoking his jealousy is rumored to be one of the reasons why Kate has consistently sought to dampen her public profile and withdraw from public life wherever possible. As the royal biographer Penny Junor told The Daily Beast recently: “I suspect Kate is holding back slightly to ensure she doesn’t overshadow her husband. That is what went so disastrously wrong for his parents.”

EveryonWilliam is also said to be intensely aware of his status as future king, to the extent, sources say, that he is often jestingly referred to in his absence as “King Billy” or “King William” by friends and staff, who clearly understand they are, in his eyes, playing supporting roles. Harry and Meghan’s trip to Australia is part of that supporting role, and no one will be more delighted it is going so well than Kate and William. With another 10 days of this 16-day monster tour still to go, there will be no let-up on the intense coverage either at home or abroad.

ButWhat remains to be seen is how serenely William and Kate will cope with Harry and Meghan’s soaring profile, if, as seems entirely likely, the all-star Sussexes continue to claim a larger slice of global and domestic attention than the decidedly drab Cambridges.

Interesting take. William sounds like kind of an ass!

Meghan and Harry are super attractive, charismatic, personable, and charming. They go out of their way for people.

It's really dumb and inefficient the way monarchy works. Who wants boring, stodgy, frumpy William and Kate as king and queen when you could have Meghan and Harry?

I would hope that William is not that petty.

It's temporary.
It will die down.

I don't think Wills cares, or I wouldn't if I were him.

England still has to go thru the Queen and Prince Charles before Wills.

Haha, the Cambridges are drab in comparison. That's the perfect word for them!

His father definitely showed himself to be that petty vis a vis Diana's popularity.

Also Prince Andrew who was reportedly upset that Meghan's baby news upstaged his daughter's wedding.

Face it, Meghan is the new "people's princess." It would take a *supremely* confident person to accept a junior colleague upstaging them this way.

I don't think William will ever be king so why should he care?

Oh my gosh, this is just such a stupid blog with a wild projection.

The honeymoon phase and baby euphoria are a perfect storm of popularity and papparazzi delight. The novelty will wear off soon. They'll both go into hiding in a few months. Then the Royals will release an official photo of Baby Louis 1st bday/Family portrait, W+K will make some appearances, and the popularity pendulum will swing the other way.

As that article points out William could be jealous of his own wife. Which I never really thought about before and puts some things in perspective.

Who knows how long Harry and Meghan will stay married. Maybe W is jealous or maybe not. He maybe glad not to be in the limelight for now.
But one thing is for sure, William is the heir. Even if it skips him for whatever reason, it will pass down to his bloodline.

What do you mean? I thought the rumor was that Charles won't - when the Queen dies he will step aside for William to try to up the 'cool' vibe of the royals and because of his own relative unpopularity.

Not really. W+K were married in 2011 and went on the same tour (but shorter) with Prince George in 2014. They received far less fervor and crowds even with the 'secret weapon' carried around.

Same thing happened when you look at Eugenie who has spent 20+ years in the spotlight. You think her wedding would be a draw but no. Pathetic crowds.

You start out strong in the royal family and you have the tendency to remain strong and only grow in passionate crowds.

Royals don't 'skip' heirs. I think the PP might have been stating that longevity is not in William's favor and/or there's a growing republican movement in the Commonwealth and/or maybe Britain (especially since the entire country's been thrown into austerity with Brexit).

Very unlikely that they will ever attract crowds or excitement like this again.

Haha - I mean...I think that's supposed to happen after a wedding. Not in a tour in foreign country. 2019 is coming and Meghan's going to announce her Royal Patronages. Get ready for more crowds.
