University of Arizona

Anyone with experience? DC wants out of state but merit aid is going to be needed (can not afford list price) and it looks like - with his grades and scores - it would be within our budget.

Also considering:
U of Minnesota
Colorado Boulder
U of SC

Not the best school, OP.

Can you get merit aid to a state school when you are out of state?

Yes. The right student can often get merit to make comparable to in-state.

If we’re ruling out the schools that are “not the best”, the only people who’d be going to college would be the <1% of seniors who go to Ivies et al. Let’s try to be helpful, k?

Arizona State gets more of the buzz these days and has probably surpassed Univ. of Arizona on many measures, but the University of Arizona is a fine state school where the vast vast majority of students will be rom AZ and CA.

It’s really good for some areas of study (certain engineering and stem fields, certain areas of economics, etc.) and on par with other big state schools for other areas. Tucson is lovely and it’s a nice campus. They give a ton of aid to in state kids with top academics (it’s free if you graduate in the top 5% or something of your class) so I doubt they give much aid to out of state kids. They tend to get a lot of applicants from the northeastern states (kids looking for sun) and certai international applicants, so I don’t know that they’re really looking to recruit out of state kids.

I’ve never understood people who post conjecture like this when it would take exactly 2 minutes to Google. U of A gives tons of $$ to out of state students.

OP here. Thanks, but we already know that he would qualify for a lot of merit aid.

Both U of A and AS are on my radar for DS because he ultimately wants to live in CA (most of our relatives are there so we visit there a lot) but we can't afford UC's OOS tuition and there aren't many (any?) privates that offer much merit aid. So, he's considering neighboring states as a better launching pad for CA jobs than staying in VA.

I would head over to collegeconfidential.com. The parents forum is helpful. Be sure to have GPA, SAT scores available.

Actually Arizona made a big jump in the USNWR rankings this year and passed ASU.
