Actually, it has a pretty good sized contigent from the East Coast and Midwest.

Typically, U of A has always surpassed Arizona State. Arizona is the flagship, while State is the land grant.

Mmm, not really. USNWR Ranking last two year.

U of A: 2018 (124 National; 58 Public. 2019 (106 and 46)
ASU: 2018 (115 and 53); 2019 (115 and 52)

Based on those numbers 27,000 of the 32,000 (close to 85%) undergrad students come from AZ and CA.

Yeah, it's definitely a *sizeable* majority, but I wouldn't consider 85% to be the vast majority.

Semantics, I guess.

If we’re ruling out the schools that are “not the best”, the only people who’d be going to college would be the <1% of seniors who go to Ivies et al. Let’s try to be helpful, k?

But the school has a solid faculty, and grad schools will take applications from there seriously. I think the University of Arizona has a reputation for being a real university, not a football team with a school attached.

The University of Colorado has a similar but better reputation but is probably harder to get into.

The University of Minnesota and the University of South Carolina must have a low level of brand recognition than the University of Arizona or the University of Colorado, because I've rarely heard them mentioned. But I'll bet that they're both perfectly good state flagship universities.

If your DC would consider them, maybe it would good to check out schools like the University of Kansas, University of Iowa and the University of Utah, too, just to see what's up with their merit aid programs.

And Arizona has a big population of military veterans who've been all over the world. Tucson is a really cosmopolitan place.

Also considering:
U of Minnesota - Visit. Make sure you visit. They have been known to reject students who they don't think will come.
Colorado Boulder - Zero chance at merit aid IMO
U of SC - Good chance at merit aid

That said, apply widely. Add more schools especially if you are seeking merit aid. Better to spend the time filling out applications than to spend the time trying to guess.

This seems like a possibility, depending on his grades and scores...but it's only $6K a year which is kind of a drop in the bucket for OOS COA.

OP - what is your budget, and what are his grades and test scores?

Traditionally, UA has been the better thought of school. ASU has pulled in some higher scoring kids and garnered attention with their honors college, but the rest of the school is not on the same level as UA.

NP. Interesting - why is ASU higher ranked then? (Not trying to be snarky. I have a kid who will probably end up applying to both, so I am legitimately curious.)

With respect to Minnesota, it is an awesome school, but the winters scare a lot of people off. There's no way around it: it gets really cold in Minneapolis! And winter does last for a long time. So many people won't even consider it because of the weather.

Arizona State's acceptance rate is almost 83% and there are as others have noted already, about 32000 students attending.

OP why not get your kid to contact the admissions dept.
