Bethesda Magazine has published its list of Bethesda area high school applications and acceptances to various colleges. I found this guide to be useful when i was trying to figure out where my kids should consider applying for college.

| It's interesting, but not sure how you use it for college selection. You have no idea of the stats of those accepted/rejected. It is also hard to tell how many acceptances are accounted for by the same student. For example, if three kids get into each of HYP, is that the same three kids or nine separate kids? Although it has its own issues, matriculation stats would in many ways be more interesting. |
| I agree that naviance has more information about particular student’s stats. But it is useful to get an overall idea of how receptive particular schools are to your kid’s high school in comparison to other schools in Montgomery County and also an idea of how well Montgomery County does in comparison to national averages at a particular school. I found it especially useful in deciding where to consider for early decision applications. If they haven’t taken anybody from your high school, it is probably a wasted shot to try for that school. Both of my kids got into their EA/ED first choice schools. |
the other thing i noticed was the differentials in acceptance even with similar numbers applying. for example, wootton, (which has a lot of asians and immigrant families) has no kids accepted to yale, yet whitman and walter johnson do. could be legacy application bonuses coming into play here. |
| And these are considered some of the top high schools in America? Yiiiikes. |
| The acceptance rates are shockingly low to me. Are there no safety schools any longer? I thought many of these schools would take anybody with a pulse. I guess not. |

I find it interesting how you can tell the demographics of the schools by what schools they apply to. Look at the HBC and then look at B-CC Blair, RM and then Whitman, Wooton, Churchill.
Then look at the top schools and see that B-Cc Blair and RM also have students getting into the top schools at the same rate if not more than the others. So those parents who hide behind the less diverse schools are really missing out. |
You need to acquaint yourself with the Common Data Sets. A school that was a safety a generation ago when I went to college generally isn’t anymore. |
It's possible, but I know the kids who were accepted to Yale in my DCs year (and the one above) at Whitman were not legacies. Harvard was more of a mix of legacies and non legacies. |
You may be aware that Blair and RM have the top magnet programs in the county? |
but thatisi not the majority of their school. |
B-CC is always such an interesting one because it includes some of the wealthiest most privileged kids in the county, but has considerably more diversity than schools people would consider similar. |
+1. Yup. |
|
I read it and realized...they all get in somewhere. My son won't be going to a highly selective school like I did -- but it's good to see the range of schools out there.

| South Carolina looks pretty popular. Merit money? |
