Is there anything I can do as a citizen to support her? Should I contact the charter school board?

| What a shit show. And hadn't Ms. Wright resigned? Why is she back? I hope they get sued big time for the injustice done to this teacher. |
| Not sure who a Ms. Wright is but I do hope that the teacher sued. Looks like according to the article the teacher moved on and went to law school. I’m interested in know if the charter board has policies around this. Unfortunately, the person who assaulted the teacher got 30 days in jail. |
| Ma Wright is the founder and yes she did resign last winter but stayed through the end of the school year (nominally). |
| I'm the reporter who wrote the story. I'll try to answer whatever questions you may have. The Charter School Board does not have much power here as this is regarded as a personnel issue, which charter schools are relatively free to maintain on their own. Other than test results, student lottery and financial audits, the charter school board usually defers to the individual charter organizations. |

Thanks for being here. (1) Is the teacher suing? (2) The school's website still lists Shantelle Wright as executive director. Is she still? (3) Jason Andrean is listed as chair of the board of directors. He's also running for DC school board. Was he involved in any decision making here? |
| The teacher is not suing at this time. Shantelle Wright was still executive director as of the time I was calling the school a few weeks ago. I had not reached out to Andrean for this story. |

Typical consequence of at-will employment. |
| If she was a DCPS employee, she would have been eligible under DC law for paid medical leave. As a charter school employee, this teacher is not. |
It isn't about charter vs non-charter; it's about the number of employees the employer has. Any small business is exempt from paid medical leave. |
It is about charter vs non charter because public schools should not be “small businesses”. |
They are nonprofits who are also exempt from employer mandates if they are small. Should we eliminate every 501c3? The teacher should have hired an employment lawyer. |
Achievement Prep has paid medical leave and is also subject to FMLA. However, FMLA does not guarantee payment. FMLA entitles employees to unpaid, job protected leave. |
|
Holy crap this is horrible.
Seriously? Charter schools are not required to protect their staff from assault on campus or provide paid leave? WTF people! "should have hired an employment lawyer" screw that the city and board of ed needs to step up and protect our teachers. How about Ms Bower herself? |
